GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

General work tasks include performing various mariculture work (monitoring fishponds, feeding and fertilizing, sampling ponds), laboratory work, harvesting fingerlings from ponds, field stocking the fingerlings into the bays, and maintaining harvesting equipment. The facility also houses the Coastal Fisheries science team. The science team performs various genetic work, life history research, and routine field work. If time allows, the summer intern has the opportunity to work with the science team to gain additional experience.

Marine Enhancement internship positions will, under the supervision of the Hatchery Manager, be responsible for fish hatchery stock enhancement. Assists Hatchery staff in the propagation and distribution of marine finfish throughout the coastal waters of Texas. Duties include collecting, tabulating, and entry of hatchery records; fish culture operations; and stock enhancement program work. Operates equipment safely under the supervision of trained staff. Maintains gear, equipment, and facility. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

NOTE (2): A 26-foot RV camper is located at the facility and available for use by hatchery intern. A personal vehicle and Driver's License are needed in case of emergencies or to gather personal supplies (i.e. groceries, toiletries, and use of public laundry mat located in Palacios, TX).
