Definition:
This position is responsible for the design, maintenance, and coordination of the City of Brighton’s forestry programs. They will perform technical and physical labor as well as setting examples for other employees and using initiative to ensure efficient accomplishment of assigned work. This position must work well independently and with teams, while providing excellent, respectful customer service and human relations skills, which support the City of Brighton’s mission and values.
Supervision:
Will work under the general supervision of the Open Space and Forestry Manager. This position will provide supervision and lead work to project development or general maintenance crews.
Example of important/essential responsibilities duties:
Responsible for the Community Forestry Program, which includes implementing a tree maintenance schedule, maintaining a current tree inventory, development of an urban forestry management/strategic plan and planning and coordinating special events associated with community forestry. Assists in establishing goals and objectives for Forestry programs. Review and provide technical input on all development plans submitted to the City for Forestry. Inspect parks and recreation landscape projects as required. Participate in the development and management of the assigned budgets; forecast additional funds needed for staffing equipment, materials, and supplies; direct the monitoring of approved expenditures; recommend adjustments as necessary. Gives educational speeches and seminars to various groups of people including presentations to City Council. Plans and coordinates urban forestry programs such as Arbor Day and Tree City USA Assist with projects involving partner organizations, volunteers, local clubs, and members of the community. Supervises contracts in relation to right-of-way maintenance, herbicide application, tree trimming, and others. Operates various types of heavy and light equipment including backhoe, loader, chipper, chainsaw, stump grinder, and trencher and performs skilled tasks in the maintenance, repair, and construction in forestry projects. Works with community groups, HOA’s and citizens on matters pertaining to forestry. Apply for and manage grants for improvement projects and operations Assists Code Enforcement team in resolving municipal code issues pertaining to trees. Collaborates in the development of policies and rules & regulations to promote a thriving urban fore Performs related duties as required or assigned.
Anticipated Work Schedule: Full-time (Monday-Friday shifts) 40 hours per week with some nights and weekends as needed. Schedule may vary depending on specific needs.
Qualifications: Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Working knowledge of propagation, planting, cultivation, pruning, and maintenance of plants, shrubs, flowers, trees, turf, and native grasses, including proper soil mixtures, fertilization, insect and disease control, basic irrigation, and a wide variety of plant material with name and characteristics. Knowledge of applicable work safety rules, procedures, and standards. Demonstrated ability to lead and set an example for subordinate non-exempt employees, seasonal employees, and volunteers in the accomplishment of a defined task. Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instruction. Considerable skill in the safe and efficient operation of mechanical hand tools and various types of equipment used in day-to-day operations. Detailed record keeping experience and report writing. Ability to be flexible in all work assignments. Ability to carry out work with minimum supervision. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Demonstrated ability to read and interpret blueprints.
Education and Training:
Graduated from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or related field. Three years of increasing responsible full-time experience in a combination of Forestry, Horticulture, or Open Space management including a minimum of one year supervisory experience.
Necessary Special Requirements: Must possess a valid Colorado's driver's license with a safe driving record. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred. ISA Certified Arborist Municipal Specialist preferred. ISAA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification preferred. Colorado Certified Pesticide Applicators license to be obtained within 1 year of hire. ISA Certified Arborist Certification Ability to complete FEMA IS 100 and IS 700 training within six (6) months of hire.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have the ability to perform heavy manual labor: shoveling, digging, lifting, pushing, pulling, and dragging. Lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Stoop, bend, and crouch for extended periods of time. Work in confined spaces. Work in extreme temperature conditions including extreme heat (>100 degrees) and extreme cold (<10 degrees). Brighton is a drug-free workplace. As a condition of employment, all applicants selected for employment must be able to successfully pass a preemployment physical, a criminal background check, and a drug screening. which includes marijuana.
