GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This position is fieldwork intensive using various sampling gears and including creel surveys, also will participate in acoustic tagging research. Fieldwork in the Sabine Lake Estuary and nearshore Gulf of America includes fishery independent sampling using bag seines, trawls, oyster dredges as well as potentially other fishery sampling gears. Sampling will be done aboard skiffs and our research vessel. There is the potential to participate in acoustic fish tagging research. Fishery dependent data is collected at area boat ramps. Daily routine often depends on weather and may include weekend work days and work days longer than 8 hours but will not exceed 40 hours in a week.

Fisheries Management internship positions will, under the direction of the Ecosystem Leader, perform routine fish and wildlife conservation work in the Sabine Lake ecosystem and nearshore Gulf of Mexico including assisting in the collection, recording, and editing of fishery-dependent data using various sampling gears while onboard skiffs and the research vessel Sabine; and fishery-independent data during creel surveys at area boat ramps. Participate in acoustic tagging research. Operates equipment safely under the supervision of trained staff. Maintains gear, equipment, and facility. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

NOTE (2): A TPWD bunkhouse is available near the Sabine Lake Fisheries Management field station but a personal vehicle and driver's license is needed to get to and from the field station.
