Dr. John Hampton (Hamp) Miller and his wife, Clarice, fell in love with Nacogdoches and Stephen F. Austin State University when his twin sons chose to attend SFA in the late 1980s. Dr. Miller soon retired from his OB-GYN practice in Denton, and the couple moved to Nacogdoches so Dr. Miller could begin his second medical career at SFA.

Dr. Miller spent nearly 20 years caring for Lumberjacks as a physician and director of the Health Services clinic as well as a professor and director for the graduate athletic training program. He also served as team physician for the Lumberjack basketball and football teams. In this role, Dr. Miller was able to mentor many undergraduate students and cheer on student-athletes. He loved working for SFA and with the student-athletes and training staff. And he loved seeing his twin sons graduate from SFA in 1992 and a grandson follow their lead.

For his service, Dr. Miller was presented with a President’s Achievement Award in 2012 from former SFA President Dr. Baker Pattillo.

Though Dr. Miller and his wife moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee, he never forgot Nacogdoches. He chose it as his final resting place.

Dr. Miller passed away June 16, 2023. The John Hampton Miller Memorial Scholarship was established to benefit a student who will graduate from the athletic training education program.

Please consider making a donation in Dr. Miller’s memory and continue the support he always gave SFA students.
