Update on the effects of SB 17
Nov. 30, 2023 - 4:44 p.m.
With the enactment of Senate Bill 17 by the Texas Legislature taking effect as law Jan. 1, 2024, and the establishment of UTS Policy 197 - Compliance with State Law Regarding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Higher Education, Stephen F. Austin State University has reviewed its policies and practices. We are committed to complying with the law while maintaining a focus on our students' success.
The Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will be eliminated, effective Dec. 1, 2023. In alignment with the strategic initiatives of access and success within the Division of Student Affairs, we have established the area of Student Development and Access Services. This new student affairs pillar will oversee several areas formerly under the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, ensuring these essential services and programs continue to support the university’s mission. The areas include:
- Disability Services
- Testing Services
- Veterans Resource Center
- and Peer Mentor Programs, including AXcel and the Aspire summer bridge program.
During this transition, Chief Diversity Officer Dr. Michara DeLaney-Fields will assume the role of special advisor to the president. As special advisor, she will engage in high-level projects and initiatives that support the university's mission, aid the transition to The University of Texas System, and help prepare the university for its 11th president. Additionally, she will continue to provide administrative oversight for the Title IX Office.
Thank you to everyone who has been a part of and contributed to the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, especially as we navigate these transitions. Your dedication to evolving roles in service of our students is invaluable. As always, our unwavering commitment lies in ensuring the success and safety of our students as we continually strive to enhance their educational experience at SFA.
Gina Oglesbee
Interim President
