Subject: Budget Update Forthcoming

It has been a month since my last memo outlining our budget challenges and a new model for higher education. In an effort to keep everyone informed and to continue transparent communications, I want to let you know that early next week I will share detailed and updated information about our FY20 (current) budget status and future budget projections (FY21). In addition, I will outline the options for meeting projected budget shortfalls based on our current information.

I know there is a lot of concern and anxiety right now and while the current and projected budgets are far from ideal, I want you to know that we have been working hard to find all possible ways to meet our budget and protect current employee positions and salaries to the extent possible. While we have been working hard in trying to protect individuals, units across all areas on campus will see reductions in operating budgets. As a result, units will have to make difficult funding decisions.

While I remain optimistic about covering our FY20 and FY21 budget shortfalls without impacting employee positions and salaries, it should be clear that if we see additional revenue shortfalls due to FY21 enrollment declines, COVID-19 resurgence, state funding cuts, etc., we will have to go back and explore any and all mechanisms to meet our budget.

In an effort to promote continued dialogue and transparency, I will be scheduling another series of “town halls” with the cabinet after the release of the budget update. This will give us the opportunity to explain our options, have further discussion and answer any questions you may have.

I look forward to explaining the details soon.
