SFA policy reminder: news media
Jan. 18, 2022 - 2:59 p.m.
Dear colleagues,
This is a reminder about university policy 15.3, “News Releases,” which addresses interaction with news media.
“Departments and individuals should not contact the news media without the assistance of University Marketing Communications,” the policy reads.
Additionally, “faculty or staff member[s] contacted by the media should notify University Marketing Communications of the interview request. University Marketing Communications can assist both sides in facilitating the interview and monitor the media outlet for publication or broadcast of the interview.”
We recognize the importance of getting messages out through the news media, and of being responsive to media requests. It is imperative that these activities are coordinated through the office charged with this responsibility. SFA’s news media practices are detailed further on the UMC website.
Before any individual contacts news media, please reach out to Graham Garner, chief marketing communications officer, who oversees UMC. If a member of the media contacts any university employee, please direct them back to UMC or contact UMC as soon as possible after the request or response.
Working together, we can ensure accuracy, completeness and integrity of information for the benefit of SFA and all its stakeholders.
