Dear SFA Community,

It is with great enthusiasm that we announce Michael McBroom as the new SFA director of athletics. Michael will officially join us May 15, bringing a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success in athletic administration.

Michael joins us from West Texas A&M University, where he has served as director of athletics since 2006. Under his leadership, WT Athletics soared to new heights, achieving an impressive list of accomplishments:

National and regional championships: His leadership led to nine national championships and over 100 Lone Star Conference and NCAA regional championships.

Facilities enhancement: Nearly $100 million was invested in constructing and renovating athletics facilities.

Fundraising and support: Generated more than $40 million in external support, significantly enhancing scholarships, facilities and team operating budgets.

Academic excellence: Spearheaded initiatives that resulted in a 37% improvement in the academic success rate and GPAs of student-athletes.

Record attendance: Set new attendance and ticket sales records across all sports.

Michael’s strategic focus has been on building championship-caliber programs, enhancing the academic performance of student-athletes, and fostering lasting relationships within the community. His previous committee roles include chair positions on both the NCAA Division II Football Committee and the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Committee, demonstrating his respected voice in collegiate sports.

Michael earned his Bachelor of Arts in advertising from Southern Methodist University and a Master of Sports Science from the United States Sports Academy. His deep roots in the Texas Panhandle and his family’s longstanding connection to the region have imbued him with a strong sense of community and commitment.

As we welcome Michael into our community, I want to express my sincere appreciation to members of the search committee, which was chaired by Damon C. Derrick, SFA vice president and general counsel. Their dedication has been critical in steering this successful search. Special thanks to Trey Turner, Jason Reese, Loree McCary, Hans Williams, Brigettee Henderson, Debbie Humphreys, and our student-athletes, Kelly Johnson (beach volleyball) and Bruce Harmon (football), for their invaluable contributions. Your collective efforts have helped us reach this proud moment for SFA.

Please join me in warmly welcoming Michael and his family to SFA. We look forward to his leadership and are excited about the future of Lumberjack athletics under his guidance.

Axe 'em, Jacks!
