Dr. Paulo Dutra, assistant professor of Spanish and Portuguese

Dutra collaborated with colleagues in Brazil to organize a book, "Literatura e Artes: Teoria feita por mulheres," or "Literature and Arts: women's scholarship."

The book is a collection of essays on scholarship produced by women.

Regents unveil three named areas within the Rusche College of Business
Hopkins Lobby

The Rusche College of Business recently held a dedication ceremony to celebrate three new areas in the McGee Business Building.

The Lou Ann Richardson classroom, Walter E. Naymola Innovation Hub and Michael J. Hopkins Lobby are part of a multilevel renovation project created to provide a more corporate environment to help students “experience business.”

“We want our students to experience business and their profession before they leave campus,” said Dr. Tim Bisping, dean of the Rusche College of Business. “It’s because of the generosity of donors that our students will learn in technology rich, collaborative and professional environments.”

Vice presidents' panel scheduled for Feb. 14

The vice presidents will take part in the third panel of the 2018-19 academic year at 2 p.m. Feb. 14 in the McGee Business Building, Room 133.

This event is part of continued efforts to foster openness and communication between campus administration and employees. Faculty and staff are welcome to attend. Questions and discussion are welcome and encouraged. For those unable to attend, the event can be viewed from a PC, Mac, Linux, iOS or Android device here.

Alumna one of six finalists for 2018 presidential awards in math and science

Ellaree Lehman ’10, third grade mathematics and science teacher at R. E. Good Elementary IB World School, is one of six Texas teachers named as finalists for the 2018 Presidential Awards for excellence in mathematics and science teaching.

The 2018 awards recognize kindergarten through sixth grade mathematics and science teachers whose innovative methods bring teaching to life in the classroom.

PAEMST is the highest recognition a mathematics or science teacher may receive for exemplary teaching in the United States. The National Science Foundation administers the award on the behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

Faculty and staff breakfast planned for Feb. 6
Faculty breakfast

The next SFA Faculty and Staff Breakfast is planned for 7 to 9 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, in the East College Dining Hall.

For a discounted price of $3, SFA faculty and staff are invited to enjoy an all-you-care-to-eat breakfast while catching up with colleagues and making new campus contacts.

Darwin Day program planned for Feb. 11
Zimmerman

SFA will host its fourth annual Darwin Day from noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 11 in the Kennedy Auditorium with featured speaker Dr. Michael Zimmerman presenting “The Confluence of Religion and Science.”

An annual celebration of science, Darwin Day is held on or around evolutionary biologist Charles Darwin’s birthday to commemorate his contributions to the field of biology.

During the presentation, Zimmerman will address the significance of evolution and discuss The Clergy Letter Project, speaking about the value of scientists and science educators working with clergy members to promote high-quality science education.

The event is free and open to the public.

Office of International Programs invites faculty and staff to participate in international friendship program

The Office of International Programs invites faculty and staff to participate in the international friendship program, which focuses on promoting interaction between SFA’s international students and members of the SFA and Nacogdoches communities.

The program acquaints international students with the American lifestyle, offers opportunities for cultural exchange, and contributes to tolerance and understanding among participants.

The program will comprise groups of four to six people. Once placed in a group, the program is self-directed by the participants.

Ideas for group activities include meeting for coffee and conversation, going to see a film in the student center, or sharing a meal.

Alumni Bus
Bus ride available to SFA basketball game

The SFA Alumni Association is offering a bus ride to the men’s and women's basketball games against Northwestern State University.

The bus ride will depart at 8:30 a.m. Feb 16 from the Pearman Alumni Center's parking lot.

The cost is $50 per person and includes a general admission game ticket, snacks, soft drinks and beer.

Basketball's Cram the Coliseum scheduled for Feb. 9

The SFA baksetball teams' Cram the Coliseum is slated for Feb. 9 at Johnson Coliseum as both teams play the Lamar University Cardinals.

The women's game is scheduled for 2 p.m., followed by the men's game at 4:30 p.m.

Ladyjacks finish fourth at the Prairie View A&M Invitational.

Track and field

Women's track and field finished fifth and the men finished seventh at the Charlie Thomas Invitational.

Music faculty to perform music of American composer Heggie tomorrow
Petti Heggie recital

Faculty members in SFA’s School of Music will present a program featuring the music of American composer and pianist Jake Heggie at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in Cole Concert Hall.

“Jake Heggie is considered to be one of the finest composers of his generation in American art song and opera,” said Ron Petti, pianist and director of collaborative piano.

“Here/After” is a series of song cycles that “give voice to silenced individuals whose stories deserve to be heard.

Wind Ensemble to present ‘Homecoming Fiesta!’ tomorrow

SFA’s Wind Ensemble will present “Homecoming Fiesta!” when the student group performs the music of Richard Strauss, Frank Ticheli, Paul Hart, Richard Wagner and Clifton Williams at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in Turner Auditorium.

Featured guest performers will be the SFA Faculty Brass Quintet, which includes Drs. Jake Walburn and Gary Wurtz, trumpets; Dr. Charles Gavin, horn; Dr. Deb Scott, trombone; and Dr. J.D. Salas, tuba.

Directed by Dr. David Campo, director of bands at SFA, the Wind Ensemble will perform “Wiener Philharmoniker Fanfare,” Ticheli’s “Nitro” and Williams’ “Symphonic Dance # 3, Fiesta,” among other selections.

School of Theatre to host Shakespeare & Company weekend intensive

SFA’s School of Theatre will host the internationally renowned Shakespeare & Company in a weekend intensive study of the language and text of William Shakespeare’s works March 8 through 10.

Designed to meet the needs of professional actors who seek an introduction to Shakespeare & Company's training methods as well as alumni who wish to refresh and reconnect with the work, the weekend intensive integrates Linklater Voice instruction, movement and monologue work. Participants will explore ways to unlock the emotional and intellectual content inherent in Shakespeare's language, yielding a direct relationship between actor and text, according to Cleo House Jr., director of the SFA School of Theatre.

The weekend intensive is from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, March 8; from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, March 9; and from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 10.
