Alumnus and SFA professor received awards at TCPEA conference

Dr. Michael D. Jones '18 was recently awarded the 2018 Outstanding Dissertation of the Year Award for his qualitative case study titled, "Exploring Scholar-Practitioner Leadership: Superintendents' Application of Theory to Practice in Texas Public School Districts."

Dr. Karen Embry-Jenlink, professor of educational leadership and chair of the dissertation study, received the 2018 Outstanding Dissertation of the Year Chair Award.

The awards were presented by the Texas Council of Professors of Educational Administration at the Texas Association of School Administrators Midwinter Conference.

Government professors publish Texas political science textbook
Lone Star Politics

Three SFA Department of Government professors published the sixth edition of the textbook "Lone Star Politics: Tradition and Transformation in Texas."

Drs. Steven Galatas and Julie Harrelson-Stephens, associate professors, and Dr. Ken Collier, professor, published the first edition in 2008. Now, more than 10 years later, the newest edition is on its way to universities across the state.

"We’re especially proud of our textbook because it helps get SFA's name on campuses throughout the state, particularly two-year colleges where many of our transfer students come from,” Collier said. "We’re happy that students at competing universities are reading our textbook."

Kyle Conlon, assistant professor and graduate program coordinator for the Department of Psychology

Conlon’s manuscript, “Mate Retention Strategies of Dominance-Oriented and Prestige-Oriented Romantic Partners,” was accepted for publication in Evolutionary Psychological Science.

According to the website, EPS is an international, interdisciplinary forum for papers addressing evolved psychology in humans and non-humans.

Dr. Paulo Dutra, assistant professor of Spanish and Portuguese

Dutra was invited to present "Reclaiming Blackness in Brazilian Rap" at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.

Tomorrow, Dutra will give a talk on his research on Brazilian hip-hop and his book of short stories and poems.

Faculty Senate meeting scheduled for today

The next Faculty Senate meeting is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. today in the McGee Business Building, Room 121.

M.E. McWilliams, director of the Academic Assistance and Resource Center, will present the 2018 AARC Impact Report. Dr. Marc Guidry, associate provost, will report on the recertification of the core curriculum.

The updated version of the Career Ladder for Non-Tenure Track Faculty has been reviewed and revised by representatives of deans, chairs and associate deans and is scheduled to be acted upon. Your senate representative is accepting input on the proposed policy before the meeting. The policy will apply to the lecturers, clinical instructors and, potentially, adjunct professors.

The third letter from Belle S. Wheelan, president of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, to Dr. Raymund Paredes, commissioner of Higher Education, regarding whether the fields of study curricula violate faculty control over the curriculum or institutional control over the transfer of credits at Texas public institutions of higher education will be discussed. MLK Celebration tickets available through the end of today

The Office of Multicultural Affairs is hosting its annual MLK Celebration to honor the life and legacy of civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Twilight Ballroom.

Dinner will be provided along with student performances. Bettie Mae Fikes, a civil rights activist, singer and storyteller, will serve as the keynote speaker.

The event is open to the SFA and Nacogdoches communities. Tickets will be available through the end of today and are $2 for SFA students with an ID, $5 for faculty and staff with an ID, and $10 for community members. To purchase tickets, visit the student center information desk on campus.

Vice presidents' panel slated for tomorrow

The vice presidents will take part in the third panel of the 2018-19 academic year at 2 p.m. tomorrow in the McGee Business Building, Room 133.

This event is part of continued efforts to foster openness and communication between campus administration and employees. Faculty and staff are welcome to attend. Questions and discussion are welcome and encouraged.

Faculty and professional advisors are invited to the Professional Academic Advisors Council meeting scheduled from 2 to 3 p.m. tomorrow in the Steen Library Wyatt Room.

Center for Teaching and Learning names Teaching Showcase presenters

SFA’s Center for Teaching and Learning has named the 10 presenters for the 2019 Teaching Showcase, which is scheduled for 2 p.m. Feb. 20 in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Multimedia Room.

The showcase provides an opportunity for faculty, staff and teaching assistants to share best practices, recognize colleagues' innovative teaching methods and hold cross-disciplinary conversations to create better learning opportunities for students.

This year’s speakers include Dr. Lauren Burrow, assistant professor of elementary education; Dr. Court Carney, professor of history; Dr. Scott Drury, associate professor of psychology; Dr. Hunter Hampton, history lecturer; Dr. Maggie Leysath, visiting assistant professor of art; Kelly McDonald, nursing clinical instructor; Dr. Chris McKenna, assistant professor of business communication and legal studies; Dr. Elizabeth Spradley, lecturer of communication studies; Dr. Bailey Thompson, assistant professor of mass communication; and Katy Trotty, nursing clinical instructor.

School of Honors to host Emmy-nominated TV anchor

SFA’s School of Honors and Department of Academic Affairs will host Emmy-nominated television anchor Suzanne Sena as she discusses her journey through various genres of news media.

Sena’s discussion, “The Fox Effect: Historical to Hysterical,” which will include stories from her time working on the Fox News Channel, “E! News,” the scripted comedy series “The Onion News Network,” and more, is part of the Wisely Fellow Speaker Series. The event will take place at 7 p.m. Feb. 20 in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Twilight Ballroom.

SFA Gardens to host Great Backyard Bird Count
Great backyard bird

SFA Gardens, the Pineywoods Audubon Society and the university’s student chapter of the National Association for Interpretation are sponsoring the Great Backyard Bird Count from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.

This free, outdoor event will have activities designed to increase knowledge and appreciation of birds for youth and adults. A variety of family friendly, hands-on learning activities will be set up, including using binoculars, learning bird identification skills, playing bird games and making bird-related crafts.

Repertory Dance Company to feature works by guest artists, faculty members

SFA’s dance program will showcase the Repertory Dance Company in concert during its production of "Everything and Nothing … etc.," which premieres at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the Cole Concert Hall.

Additional showings are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, and 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16. Admission is free for SFA students, and non-SFA students may attend for $8. Tickets are $10 for faculty, staff and senior citizens, and $12 for general admission. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

The production will feature works by guest artists and SFA faculty from the dance program. The Alief Jazz Ballet Company, which is under the direction of alumna Kelsey Key, will perform, marking the first time alumni from the SFA dance program have performed alongside the Repertory Dance Company.

School of Theatre to present ‘Crazy Eights’

SFA’s School of Theatre will present David Lindsay-Abaire’s one-act play “Crazy Eights” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, in the Downstage Theatre.

Directed by Needville senior Alex Duty, “Crazy Eights” is about an ex-con, Connie, who comes home late one night to find her parole officer waiting in her apartment with a torte and a long list of questions. The interrogation and courting dance that follows is complicated by the after-hours arrival of Connie’s charming card-playing friend, Duty explains.

Faculty production advisor for “Crazy Eights” is Cleo House Jr., director of the School of Theatre. The play is recommended for mature audiences.

Caddo storytelling, children’s activities planned at Cole Art Center

SFA Art Galleries will host renowned storyteller Kricket Rhoads-Connywerdy from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

Rhoads-Connywerdy is an enrolled member of the Caddo and Kiowa tribes of Oklahoma.

Dancing in her traditional Caddo dress and Kiowa buckskin, Rhoads-Connywerdy toured with the legendary Charles Chibitty, the last Comanche code talker, and was Gulhei descendent princess (family princess) for 1999-00. She has won awards for her lead movie roles, which included “The Legend of Billy Fail,” “The Alamo,” “Chasing the Wind,” “Last of the Mohicans” and “UHF.”
