Robert Maxwell Lecture Series to feature Dr. Kyle Longley

The Department of History will hold its annual Robert Maxwell Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Twilight Ballroom.

This year’s lecturer is Dr. Kyle Longley, director of the LBJ Presidential Library. His talk will be over his latest book, “LBJ's 1968.”

Longley is a former Snell Family Dean's Distinguished Professor of History and Political Science at Arizona State University. He is a historian with research focusing on U.S. foreign relations and modern American politics, a prize-winning teacher, author of 10 books, including “The Morenci Marines: A Tale of Small Town America and the Vietnam War” and “Grunts: The American Combat Soldier in Vietnam.”

The lecture is free and is open to the public.

OMA to host ‘Something To Chew On’ series

The Office of Multicultural Affairs will host the “Something to Chew On” series from noon to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 26 in the Baker Pattillo Student Center, Rooms 3.101 and 3.102.

The series helps stimulate open dialogue about current issues among the campus community. This event will focus on “Achieving Unity Within Diversity” and feature discussions on how to unify campus organizations and students.

The series is free and open to SFA students, faculty, staff and the community. Participants also can engage in interactive activities, and food and prizes will be offered.

Alumni Association to host third annual Sportsman Social

Join the SFA Alumni Association for the third annual SFA Sportsman Social at East Texas' premier shooting destination, Meadow Ridge Archery and Gun. The event is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22.

The event will include balloon pop archery, live music, food and beverages. The cost to attend is $10, which includes one round of balloon-pop archery.

School of Honors to host Emmy-nominated TV anchor
Sena

SFA’s School of Honors and Department of Academic Affairs will host Emmy-nominated television anchor Suzanne Sena as she discusses her journey through various genres of news media.

Sena’s discussion, “The Fox Effect: Historical to Hysterical,” which will include stories from her time working on the Fox News Channel, “E! News,” the scripted comedy series “The Onion News Network,” and more, is part of the Wisely Fellow Speaker Series. The event will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Twilight Ballroom.

Center for Teaching and Learning names Teaching Showcase presenters

SFA’s Center for Teaching and Learning has named the 10 presenters for the 2019 Teaching Showcase, which is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Multimedia Room.

The showcase provides an opportunity for faculty, staff and teaching assistants to share best practices, recognize colleagues' innovative teaching methods and hold cross-disciplinary conversations to create better learning opportunities for students.

This year’s speakers include Dr. Lauren Burrow, assistant professor of elementary education; Dr. Court Carney, professor of history; Dr. Scott Drury, associate professor of psychology; Dr. Hunter Hampton, history lecturer; Dr. Maggie Leysath, visiting assistant professor of art; Kelley McDonald, nursing clinical instructor; Dr. Chris McKenna, assistant professor of business communication and legal studies; Dr. Elizabeth Spradley, assistant professor of communication studies; Dr. Bailey Thompson, assistant professor of mass communication; and Katy Trotty, nursing clinical instructor.

Career and Internship Expo scheduled for Feb. 20

The Center for Career and Professional Development will host the 2019 Spring Career and Internship Expo from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in Baker Pattillo Student Center Grand Ballroom and Regents' Suite A.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to inform students about the event.

Click here for a list of participating employers. If a faculty member would like record of attendance for their students, a class roster or a sign-in sheet must be provided by the faculty member to the CCPD by tomorrow.

Students will need to bring their student ID for check-in, as well as copies of their résumé to distribute to employers. Professional dress is required. Résumé assistance and the center's free Career Closet are available to help students prepare for the event. Information about these resources may be found on the center's website.

SFA to host customer service workshop

SFA's Human Resources has coordinated with Dr. Chay Runnels, hospitality administration program coordinator and associate professor, to offer a professional development workshop on customer service.

The Texas Friendly customer service workshop teaches participants how to manage and enhance the delivery of quality customer service.The program focuses on six hospitality habits necessary for quality customer service: make a good first impression; know your job; know your community; communicate clearly; handle problems effectively; and make a good last impression.

Other topics emphasized include business etiquette, phone courtesy, working with difficult people, handling complaints, cultural etiquette and communication.

The workshop is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, in the Education Annex, in the Culinary Café.

Orchestra of the Pines to perform works by Barber, Mendelssohn

SFA’s Orchestra of the Pines will perform the music of Samuel Barber and Felix Mendelssohn in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in Cole Concert Hall.

Dr. Pierre-Alain Chevalier, visiting director of orchestral activities in the School of Music, will conduct the orchestra performing “Sorrow and Joy” featuring Barber’s “Knoxville: Summer of 1915” and Mendelssohn’s “Italian.”

Soprano Amanda Sheriff is soloist for “Knoxville: Summer of 1915,” op. 24. The orchestra’s program will also include Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 in A major, op. 90, his Italian symphony.

SFA to present Turner, Leonberger in vocal recital

SFA’s School of Music will present a vocal faculty-guest recital featuring Dr. Chris Turner and Dr. Garry Leonberger at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, in the Music Recital Hall.

Turner is an assistant professor of voice at SFA, and Leonberger is a former SFA music faculty member who is now on the voice faculty at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Dr. Ron Petti, director of collaborative piano at SFA, will accompany.

The tenor-baritone recital will feature beloved standards from vocal literature in each of the genres, according to Turner.

Texas New Music Ensemble to perform at SFA

SFA’s School of Music will present members of the Texas New Music Ensemble at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, in Cole Concert Hall.

The Houston-based ensemble’s program will focus solely on music written by composers who live and work in Texas, according to Chad Robinson, the ensemble’s artistic director and founder.

Among the works to be showcased is “Whitewater,” composed by Dr. Stephen Lias, professor of composition in the SFA School of Music.

‘Up Close and Personal’ to raise funds for SFA School of Music

The Friends of Music at SFA will host a fundraiser for the School of Music that will give the community and contributors an entertaining “behind-the-scenes” look at the school and its talented faculty and students.

“Up Close and Personal” will be presented from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. March 3 in the Wright Music Building. Beginning with an opening reception in the lobby of Cole Concert Hall, participants will enjoy hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar, and bid on silent auction items.

There is no charge for admission, but donations will be accepted. Reservations and/or credit card donations are accepted by calling (936) 468-6407.
