History department hosts “A Literate South” author

SFA’s Department of History will host Dr. Beth Barton Schweiger, a historian and 1983 SFA alumna, at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, in Dugas Liberal Arts North, Room 142.

Schweiger’s talk, “A Literate South: Why Southern Readers Matter,” will detail how her experience at SFA shaped her career and forthcoming book, “A Literate South: Reading Before Emancipation.” According to Dr. Hunter Hampton, lecturer in SFA’s history department, attendees will hear about the importance of literature and literacy in the American South during the years leading up to the Civil War.

School of Honors to host Emmy-nominated TV anchor tonight
Sena

SFA’s School of Honors and Department of Academic Affairs will host Emmy-nominated television anchor Suzanne Sena as she discusses her journey through various genres of news media.

Sena’s discussion, “The Fox Effect: Historical to Hysterical,” which will include stories from her time working on the Fox News Channel, “E! News,” the scripted comedy series “The Onion News Network,” and more, is part of the Wisely Fellow Speaker Series. The event will take place at 7 p.m. tonight in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Twilight Ballroom.

Robert Maxwell Lecture Series to feature Dr. Kyle Longley tomorrow

The Department of History will hold its annual Robert Maxwell Lecture Series at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Twilight Ballroom.

This year’s lecturer is Dr. Kyle Longley, director of the LBJ Presidential Library. His talk will be over his latest book, “LBJ's 1968.”

Longley is a former Snell Family Dean's Distinguished Professor of History and Political Science at Arizona State University. He is a historian with research focusing on U.S. foreign relations and modern American politics, a prize-winning teacher, author of 10 books, including “The Morenci Marines: A Tale of Small Town America and the Vietnam War” and “Grunts: The American Combat Soldier in Vietnam.”

The lecture is free and is open to the public.

SFA to host customer service workshop

SFA's Human Resources has coordinated with Dr. Chay Runnels, hospitality administration program coordinator and associate professor, to offer a professional development workshop on customer service.

The Texas Friendly customer service workshop teaches participants how to manage and enhance the delivery of quality customer service.The program focuses on six hospitality habits necessary for quality customer service: make a good first impression; know your job; know your community; communicate clearly; handle problems effectively; and make a good last impression.

Other topics emphasized include business etiquette, phone courtesy, working with difficult people, handling complaints, cultural etiquette and communication.

The workshop is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, in the Education Annex, in the Culinary Café.

Sportsman Social
Alumni Association to host third annual Sportsman Social

Join the SFA Alumni Association for the third annual SFA Sportsman Social at East Texas' premier shooting destination, Meadow Ridge Archery and Gun. The event is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22.

The event will include balloon pop archery, live music, food and beverages. The cost to attend is $10, which includes one round of balloon-pop archery.

Nursing Career Expo slated for March 4
Nursing Expo

In conjunction with the DeWitt School of Nursing, the Center for Career and Professional Development will host the 2019 Nursing Career Expo from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 4 at the DeWitt School of Nursing Complex, located at 5707 North St.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to inform students about the event, especially those who may be looking to secure a nursing position post-graduation. Click here for a list of participating employers.

Students will need to bring their student ID for check-in, as well as copies of their résumé to distribute to employers. Résumé assistance and the center's free Career Closet are available to help students prepare for the event. Information about these resources may be found on the center's website.

Spatial science program offers new emphasis track

SFA’s spatial science program now offers a third discipline specialization track, which allows students to explore the broad range of geospatial applications within the field of liberal and applied arts.

Spatial science majors pursuing the new cultural resources track select a minor from SFA’s College of Liberal and Applied Arts, allowing them to incorporate their knowledge of spatial science technologies in fields such as anthropology, criminal justice, political science and geography.

Orchestra of the Pines to perform works by Barber, Mendelssohn tonight

SFA’s Orchestra of the Pines will perform the music of Samuel Barber and Felix Mendelssohn in a concert at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Cole Concert Hall.

Dr. Pierre-Alain Chevalier, visiting director of orchestral activities in the School of Music, will conduct the orchestra performing “Sorrow and Joy” featuring Barber’s “Knoxville: Summer of 1915” and Mendelssohn’s “Italian.”

Soprano Amanda Sheriff is soloist for “Knoxville: Summer of 1915,” op. 24. The orchestra’s program will also include Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 in A major, op. 90, his Italian symphony.

Texas New Music Ensemble to perform tomorrow

SFA’s School of Music will present members of the Texas New Music Ensemble at 6 p.m. tomorrow in Cole Concert Hall.

The Houston-based ensemble’s program will focus solely on music written by composers who live and work in Texas, according to Chad Robinson, the ensemble’s artistic director and founder.

Among the works to be showcased is “Whitewater,” composed by Dr. Stephen Lias, professor of composition in the SFA School of Music.

SFA to present Turner, Leonberger in vocal recital tomorrow

SFA’s School of Music will present a vocal faculty-guest recital featuring Dr. Chris Turner and Dr. Garry Leonberger at 6 p.m. tomorrow in the Music Recital Hall.

Turner is an assistant professor of voice at SFA, and Leonberger is a former SFA music faculty member who is now on the voice faculty at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Dr. Ron Petti, director of collaborative piano at SFA, will accompany.

The tenor-baritone recital will feature beloved standards from vocal literature in each of the genres, according to Turner.

School of Art to screen ‘Koo-Hoot Kiwat: The Caddo Grass House’
Caddo House

SFA’s School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of the documentary “Koo-Hoot Kiwat: The Caddo Grass House” at 7 p.m. March 1 in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

In the PBS film directed by Curtis Craven, a Caddo tribal elder and his apprentice return to their ancestral homeland in East Texas to direct the construction of a traditional grass house.

The film is being shown in conjunction with an exhibition of Caddo Nation artists showing through March 24 in The Cole Art Center. “Caddo Contemporary: Present and Relevant” is an exhibition of ceramics, paintings, beadwork, stonework and drawings by seven living Caddo artists.

Wildlife photos

Photographer Julian Rad has a knack for capturing photos of critters in their everyday life.

In 2015, Rad won the renowned Comedy Wildlife Photography Award with his image of a running hamster, titled "Rush Hour.”

His photo "Summer Feelings" is a nice reminder to stop and smell the flowers.
