Sportsman Social
SFA Alumni Association to host third annual Sportsman Social tonight

Join the SFA Alumni Association for the third annual Sportsman Social at East Texas' premier shooting destination, Meadow Ridge Archery and Gun. The event is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight.

The event will include balloon pop archery, live music, food and beverages. The cost to attend is $10, which includes one round of balloon pop archery.

Women in STEM Style Show and Luncheon committee seeking posters

The organizers of the annual Women in STEM Style Show and Luncheon are requesting research posters in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines for a gallery walk scheduled for April 9.

Anyone interested may apply to present a poster. Click here to apply. Limited funding is available for poster printing.

The deadline to submit an application is March 27. Acceptance notices will be sent by March 29.

Early Childhood Laboratory accepting applications

The Early Childhood Laboratory is accepting applications for all classrooms, infants through pre-K, from March 1 through 31.

Applications are available in the lab's main office, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Wellness challenge week one rankings released

The fifth annual Kick Axe Wellness Challenge began Feb. 4, and SFA’s Employee Wellness staff members would like to recognize and congratulate the top three winning teams for exemplifying wellness throughout the challenge's first week.

Dr. Vitamin and the Aches and Pains placed first. Team members include Becky Garrett, John Wyatt, Kim Odems and Cristina Santoyo.

Team Bod Squad placed second. Team members include Gloria Hoefler-Johnson, Joyce Johnston, Carrie Kennedy-Lightsey and Geivonna Little.

Hangry Axe Lumberjacks placed third. Team members include Katie McClain, Jamie Derrick, Brad Fox and Lisa Mozingo.

Department of History to host “A Literate South” author
Schweiger

SFA’s Department of History will host Dr. Beth Barton Schweiger, a historian and 1983 SFA alumna, at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, in Dugas Liberal Arts North, Room 142.

Schweiger’s talk, “A Literate South: Why Southern Readers Matter,” will detail how her experience at SFA shaped her career and forthcoming book, “A Literate South: Reading Before Emancipation.” According to Dr. Hunter Hampton, lecturer in SFA’s history department, attendees will hear about the importance of literature and literacy in the American South during the years leading up to the Civil War.

OMA to host ‘Something To Chew On’ series

The Office of Multicultural Affairs will host the “Something to Chew On” series from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center, Rooms 3.101 and 3.102.

The series helps stimulate open dialogue about current issues among the campus community. This event will focus on “Achieving Unity Within Diversity” and feature discussions on how to unify campus organizations and students.

The series is free and open to SFA students, faculty, staff and the community. Participants also can engage in interactive activities, and food and prizes will be offered.

Campus Recreation to host Spring Wellness Fair
Wellness Fair

Campus Recreation’s Spring Wellness Fair will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Twilight Ballroom.

Services will include various wellness exams, chair massages, product samples, refreshments, educational materials and giveaways from a variety of SFA and Nacogdoches organizations and businesses. The event is free to faculty, staff and students.

It is a great opportunity for students to learn about various organizations on campus and in the community. Faculty members are encouraged to bring or inform their classes about the event.

Pianist Hai Jin’s concert canceled

A concert by pianist Hai Jin originally scheduled for tonight in Cole Concert Hall has been canceled due to inclement weather affecting the artist’s travel plans.

Buyse-Webster Duo to present flute, clarinet recital
Clarinet duo

SFA’s School of Music and the Friends of Music Concert Series will present the Buyse-Webster Duo performing in a flute and clarinet recital at 1 p.m. March 2 in Cole Concert Hall.

Leone Buyse is the Joseph and Ida Kirkland Mullen Professor of Flute at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. Her husband, clarinetist Michael Webster, is professor of music at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music and artistic director of the Houston Youth Symphony. Accompanying them in the SFA recital will be Dr. Ron Petti, director of collaborative piano in the SFA School of Music.

ArtsPower brings ‘Madeline and the Bad Hat’ to SFA stage
Madeline

SFA’s Children's Performing Arts Series will present two performances of the enchanting "Madeline and the Bad Hat" on March 6 in Turner Auditorium.

Capturing the blithe yet touching spirit of the much-loved Madeline, this tale traces the adventures of a young Parisian girl who – despite starting off on the wrong foot with a mischievous new neighbor – eventually learns that first impressions aren’t everything.

The show targets children in pre-kindergarten through third grade. Study guides provide suggestions for pre- and post-performance activities and discussions for teachers to use in the classroom. A comprehensive study guide for "Madeline and the Bad Hat" may be accessed at cpas.sfasu.edu.

Performances are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Tickets are $7.50 for individuals and $6 per person for groups of 20 or more.

Emojis

Lumberjacks everywhere will soon have a new digital way to “Axe ’em!”

Among Unicode Consortium’s upcoming release of its 2019 emojis will be a shiny axe so that texts will never be without a bit of school spirit.

Emoji 12.0 is comprised of 59 new emojis; 75 when gender variations are taken into account; and 230 when all skin tone options also are included.
