SFA Today to pause publication during spring break

In observance of spring break, SFA Today will pause publication after Friday, March 15.

Publication will resume Monday, March 25.

Faculty Senate meeting scheduled for today

The fifth meeting of the Faculty Senate for 2018-19 is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. today in the McGee Business Building, Room 121.

Dr. Steve Westbrook, interim president, will give a legislative update and hold a Q&A session. Dr. Steve Bullard, provost, also is expected to present.

Ad hoc committees on Southern Association of College and Schools, student retention, intellectual property policy and chosen names use by employees will report their progress to the senate.

A proposal for a faculty-based mentoring program is on the agenda, as well as a discussion regarding feedback on the children in the workplace policy presented at last month’s meeting.

PAAC to host March meeting tomorrow

Faculty members and professional advisors are invited to the Professional Academic Advisors Council meeting scheduled for 2 to 3 p.m. tomorrow in the Steen Library Wyatt Room.

SFA and the Lone Star College System announce partnership

A new partnership between SFA and the Lone Star College System will enable eligible students to enroll in SFA’s Bachelor of Science in spatial science program upon receiving an Associate of Applied Science in geographic information systems.

“Lone Star College has a strong Associate of Applied Science program in geographic information systems,” said Dr. Hans Williams, dean of SFA’s Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture. “After completing the degree at Lone Star, students can seamlessly transfer to SFA’s Bachelor of Science in spatial science program, further enhancing their technical and professional skills that lead to rewarding careers in geospatial analysis across many disciplines.”

Stone Fort Museum to present St. Patrick’s Day concert

The Stone Fort Museum will serve as the venue for a St. Patrick’s Day concert by local band El Camino Real de Nacogdoches from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 16.

According to band members Paul Driver, Jon Hall, Charlie Jones, Mark McLain, Robbie Roach, Craig and Michelle Smith, and Jesse Tingle, the band is East Texas’ answer to The Old Crow Medicine Show, an Americana string band based in Nashville, playing old-time acoustic music using the fiddle, guitars, mandolin, banjos and percussion.

The concert is free and open to the public. Weather permitting, the band will perform on the downstairs porch. Light refreshments will be served and include traditional Irish treats.

SFA Gardens to host Little Princess Tea Party
Princess Tea Party

SFA Gardens will host its annual Little Princess Tea Party at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. March 30 in the Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden.

Make plans to join charming butterfly fairies for a delightful party with treats, fairy gardens, magic and merriment among the enchanting pines and azaleas.

This event is recommended for princesses ages 3 to 10 who are accompanied by an adult. Tickets can be reserved online at sfagardens.sfasu.edu.

Social Events team to offer faculty and staff night
Faculty and Staff Night

SFA’s Social Events team is hosting a faculty and staff night scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. April 4.

Create art with colleagues at downtown Nacogdoches' newest alumna-owned business, Piece Makers Studio, located at 905 E. Main St.

The cost for space reservation and completed project is $20 per person. Bringing adult beverages is allowed.

SFA Gardens to host spring plant sale

SFA Gardens will host its annual Garden Gala Day Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 6 at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.

The sale will feature more than 300 varieties of hard-to-find, “Texas-tough” plants, including Texas natives, edibles, heirlooms, tropicals, perennials, shrubs and trees, with an emphasis on pollinator-friendly selections, as well as exclusive SFA introductions.

Parking will be available at SFA’s Janice A. Pattillo Early Childhood Research Center, and visitors are encouraged to arrive early and bring a wagon to haul their plants.

School of Honors to welcome former director today
Richman

SFA’s School of Honors will host a lecture by its former director, Dr. Allen Richman, professor emeritus of history, at 3 p.m. today in the McKibben Education Building, Room 131.

Richman, the 2006-07 Regents Professor, will present “For Faith and Fortune – The Significance of the First Crusade: 1095-1099.” He will discuss the history of the crusade and its lasting significance on the world.

This event is free and open to the SFA and Nacogdoches communities. Refreshments will be provided.

The deadline for the Research Grant Development and Research Pilot Studies grants is 5 p.m. March 25.

Hachidori Duo to present ‘Musical Dialogues’ in SFA concert tomorrow
Hachidori

The Hachidori Duo will present “Musical Dialogues” when the husband-wife duo performs at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in Cole Concert Hall.

The Hachidori Duo was founded in 1998 by Jennifer Dalmas, violin, and Evgeni Raychev, cello, while they were each pursuing doctoral degrees in music performance at Florida State University. Since 2003, both performers have taught in SFA's School of Music.

“‘Hachidori’ is the Japanese word for hummingbird,” Dalmas said. “These incredible and beautiful creatures open our eyes to the beauty of the natural world. It is our hope that the music we perform will open a new world for our audience, as well.”
