Lecture Series to feature Houston TreeTown USA territory manager

SFA Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.

Heather Thormahlen-Molik will present “Nature’s Bounty for Home and Business: Using Natural Vegetation for Wreaths, Garlands and Table Decorations.”

The Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series is held the second Thursday of each month and includes a rare plant raffle after the program. The lecture is free and open to the public, but donations are always appreciated.

Luis Enrique Mejía Godoy to visit SFA

Nicaraguan folk singer and artist Luis Enrique Mejía Godoy will present a book of art presses, the product of a collaboration among SFA Spanish students, Juan Carlos Ureña, Charles D. Jones and the LaNana Creek Press. The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

Mejía Godoy will talk about the collaboration on this project and perform songs. He also will present a music concert with his trio at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, in the Cole Concert Hall.

The free events are sponsored by the Department of Languages, Cultures and Communication International Art Series.

SFA Gardens to host Kiwifruit Field Day

SFA Gardens will host its third Kiwifruit Field Day with presentations on the growing, research and marketing of kiwifruit.

The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 20 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building, Room 101, at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.

Lunch will be provided, followed by a tour of the kiwifuit field trials at SFA Gardens from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units will be available for participants.

The cost of the field day is $30 per person, and advance registration is required. To register, visit sfagardens.sfasu.edu, or visit the SFA Gardens Facebook page.

Office of Research and Graduate Studies, University Research Council announce updated grant process

The Office of Research and Graduate Studies and the University Research Council are pleased to announce the updated minigrants, Research Pilot Studies, and Research Grant Development guidelines and applications, which are now available online.

Guidelines and applications for the Research/Creative Activity competitive grants are expected to be available the week of Sept. 9.

Meetings planned to discuss potential organization for women faculty members

A meeting is scheduled to discuss the possibility of creating an organization for women faculty members that would advocate for women's professional career advancement and well-being.

The meeting will include discussion concerning whether or not such an organization is needed, what form(s) the organization might take, the purposes of the organization and how to go about establishing it.

A meeting is scheduled for 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, in the Steen Library, Room 220 A.

SFA Gardens to host fall plant sale
Plant Sale

SFA Gardens will host its annual Fabulous Fall Festival Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 5 in the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.

The sale will feature more than 300 varieties of hard-to-find, “Texas-tough” plants, including natives, edibles, heirlooms, perennials, shrubs and trees, with an emphasis on pollinator-friendly selections, as well as exclusive SFA introductions. The featured plants are extensively trialed before being offered to the public and are produced by SFA Gardens staff members and volunteers.

Tickets are still available to the University Series performance of the Chicago-based comedy-improv troupe The Second City, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. tonight in Turner Auditorium.

Single event ticket prices are $30 for adults, $24 for seniors, $15 for SFA faculty and staff, and $12 for non-SFA students/youth. Tickets for SFA students are $3.

Guest artist Jesse, SFA pianist Petti to perform recital
Jesse and Petti

SFA’s Friends of Music Concert Series will present guest artist Dennis Jesse performing a voice recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, in Cole Concert Hall. Jesse will be accompanied by Dr. Ron Petti, professor and director of collaborative piano for SFA’s School of Music.

Jesse, who is now associate professor of voice at Louisiana State University, and Petti were classmates in the opera program at Bowling Green State University in the early 1990s. Jesse sang the well-known aria “Largo al factotum” from Gioachino Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” on Petti’s master’s degree recital.

Jesse and Petti will perform a recital of treasured songs and arias by Johannes Brahms, Henri Duparc, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Georges Bizet, Samuel Barber and Giuseppe Verdi.
