Faculty members, graduate students to be published

Drs. Steven Estrada, associate professor of psychology, and Sylvia Middlebrook, assistant professor of psychology, along with former psychology graduate students Alex Griego and Jared Datzman, will be published in the Journal of Intellectual Disability Research.

Results of their study, “Suggestibility and False Memories in Relation to Intellectual Disability and Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Meta-Analytic Review,” indicate increased susceptibility toward memory suggestibility and false memories for individuals with intellectual disability when compared with the general population. However, data did not support this trend for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

An early view of the article is available on the Wiley Online Library website.

Early Childhood Research Center to hold 10th anniversary celebration, flagpole dedication

SFA’s Janice A. Pattillo Early Childhood Research Center will hold its 10th anniversary celebration at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 22 in front of the ECRC, located at 2428 Raguet St. The dedication of the Baker Pattillo Memorial Flagpole will be included in the celebration.

The ECRC opened its doors July 19, 2009, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, children’s singing performances and public tours. Ten years later, guests at the anniversary celebration will be treated to cake, cookies and beverages, as members of the Lumberjack Marching Band, Spirit Teams and choir perform. The event is free, and the public is invited.

The dedication of the Baker Pattillo Memorial Flagpole will take place toward the beginning of the anniversary celebration, with SFA’s ROTC members presenting the colors and Lori Harkness, director of the Early Childhood Laboratory and campus coordinator for the SFA Charter School, dedicating the flagpole in Pattillo’s honor.

For more information about the event or charter school, contact Harkness at (936) 468-4006.

The caucus aims to create an atmosphere where faculty, staff and students feel welcome, respected and heard.

Spots are limited. If you are interested, contact Veronica Beavers, OMA director, at vbeavers@sfasu.edu.

Accounting Expo scheduled for Sept. 18
Accounting Expo

The Center for Career and Professional Development will host the 2019 Accounting Expo from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Grand Ballroom.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to inform students about the event, especially those who may be looking to secure an accounting internship or a full-time accounting position. For a list of participating employers, click here.

Students need to bring their student ID for check-in, as well as copies of their résumé to distribute to employers. Professional dress is required. Résumé assistance and the center's free Career Closet are available to help students prepare for the event. Information about these resources may be found on the center's website.

For more information, contact Brandi Derouen, CCPD assistant director, at derouenb@sfasu.edu or (936) 468-3305.

Faculty Senate meeting scheduled for today

The first meeting of the Faculty Senate for the 2019-20 academic year is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. today in the Forestry Building, Room 117.

Attend in person, or view the meeting live online.

Dr. Steve Westbrook, interim president, or Dr. Scott Gordon, incoming president, is expected to provide an update. Dr. Steve Bullard, provost and vice president for academic affairs, also is expected to present.

The senate will hold a special election to fill a vacancy from the James I. Perkins College of Education.

Proposals to amend the constitution relating to nontenure track faculty members will be discussed. The following considerations are at the center of this effort:

• Changing the word ‘adjunct’ to ‘nontenure track’ in all instances in section six of the constitution.

• Given that nontenure track faculty members represent approximately 47% of faculty members at SFA, are two seats sufficient?

• Should election procedures for nontenure track faculty member representatives be revised to three-year terms, the same as all other senators?

For more information, contact your senator or Jeremy Stovall, senate chair, at stovalljp@sfasu.edu. To view the senator list, click here.

Cole Art Center to host show reception, gallery talk

Two events will take place Sept. 21 in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, SFA's historic downtown art gallery.

A reception for the exhibition “The Color of Grief” is at 3 p.m., followed by a gallery talk by Wesley Berg, assistant professor of drawing and painting in the School of Art, at 6 p.m.

“The Color of Grief” features art created by children who attended a youth grief camp through Hospice in the Pines. The small paintings on canvas, created by children ages 4 through 16, express the feelings each experienced in the loss of a loved one.

Berg will discuss his work in the exhibition “Shadow Plane: Works on Paper by Wesley Berg,” which is the featured faculty show in this year’s School of Art Faculty Exhibition. The faculty exhibition traditionally features a wide variety of artwork in ceramics, sculpture, photography, painting, prints, metal work and mixed media.

Art exhibitions and receptions are free and open to the public. For more information, call (936) 468-1131.
