ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Cynthia Marshall Devlin, adjunct faculty member in the Department of History
Devlin

Devlin recently presented her paper, “Bypass the Glass Ceiling: Texas Women Disrupt Traditional Male-Dominate Business Models,” at the Oxford Women’s Leadership Symposium.

She joined women and guests from around the world to address discrimination in the workplace and gender issues that create obstacles for women as they strive to maximize their talents.

Devlin's paper showcases examples of women, from the early ranching days to the present, who circumvented status-quo business environments.

At the start of 2019, Texas became the No. 1 state for female business startups, and these women skirted the traditional routes to the boardroom.

The roots of the Texas-style movement resulted from a Southern culture that emphasized feminine nurturing patterns and an embedded cultural worldview. This worldview promoted male dominance, which amplified men's perceptions that women possessed little, if any, business acumen.

Dr. Mark Sanders, College of Liberal and Applied Arts associate dean, professor of English
Sanders

Sanders recently toured Nebraska promoting his collection “In A Good Time,” published by Wayne State College.

His tour included readings at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Northeast Community College and Wayne State College, and book signings at the Nebraska Book Festival.

Pictured: Sanders with longtime mentor and friend Ted Kooser, who was named the United States Poet Laureate in 2004 and won the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry in 2005.

Dr. Russell Franks, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry

An article co-authored by Franks and former SFA graduate student Darean Bague was recently accepted for publication in the Texas Journal of Science.

The article, “Synthesis and Characterization of Fatty Acid Methyl Ester Mixtures Derived from Acorn Kernel Oil,” describes Bague’s work gathering acorns, extracting the kernel oil and subjecting it to a chemical reaction to form biodiesel fuel products.

The project is part of an ongoing effort in Franks’ laboratory to synthesize and characterize new fuel sources from materials not typically used for food by humans.

‘The Wolves’ provides excellent roles for women
The wolves

Audiences who watch Sarah DeLappe’s “The Wolves” come to life on Turner Auditorium's stage in October will likely be reminded of some of the challenges they encountered trying to navigate the adolescent angst of high school years.

A finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, “The Wolves” will be presented by the SFA School of Theatre Tuesday through Saturday, Oct. 1 through 5, at 7:30 each night. Directed by Professor Rick Jones, this coming-of-age play follows the daily routines and conversations of nine girls on a soccer team who deal with big problems and tiny battles in a portrait of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for kids who just want to score some goals.

Single tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and non-SFA students, and $7.50 for youth. Tickets for SFA students are $5. For tickets or more information, call the SFA Fine Arts Box Office at (936) 468-6407, or visit theatre.sfasu.edu.

Bees

McDonald’s Sweden is creating a buzz by building bee hotels on the back of their billboards. The goal of the project, along with the tiny restaurant for bees, is to bring attention to the bee crisis.

Nord DDB, the creative agency behind the bee-focused architecture, explained that 30% of wild bees in the country are threatened, mainly because they do not have enough resting areas.
