SFA Gardens to host Great Backyard Bird Count tomorrow
SFA Gardens, the Pineywoods Audubon Society and the university’s student chapter of the National Association for Interpretation are sponsoring the Great Backyard Bird Count from 9 a.m. to noon tomorrow at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.
This free, outdoor event will have activities designed to increase knowledge and appreciation of birds for youth and adults. A variety of family friendly, hands-on learning activities will be set up, including using binoculars, learning bird identification skills, playing bird games and making bird-related crafts.

Bus ride available to SFA basketball game tomorrow
The SFA Alumni Association is offering a bus ride to the men’s and women's basketball games against Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
The bus ride will depart at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow from the Pearman Alumni Center's parking lot.
The cost is $50 per person and includes a general admission game ticket, snacks, soft drinks and beer.

SFA to crown state champion tree
SFA’s Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture will host a public ceremony to officially crown the latest addition to the Texas Big Tree Registry.
The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. March 1 at the SFA Mast Arboretum gazebo, located at 2031 Wilson Drive.
The tree, a chalk maple, was submitted to the Texas A&M University Forest Service for consideration by Greg Grant, Smith County extension agent and former horticulturalist for SFA Gardens.

Human Sciences to host merchandising exhibit
SFA’s School of Human Sciences merchandising program students invite you to attend its merchandising exhibit, “Fashion Meets Interiors.”
An opening reception is scheduled from 2 to 3:30 p.m. March 2 in the Education Annex Building, Room 125.
Additional showings of the exhibit are from 11 a.m. to noon Feb. 26 through April 4 in the merchandising gallery.

SFA to host customer service workshop
SFA's Human Resources has coordinated with Dr. Chay Runnels, hospitality administration program coordinator and associate professor, to offer a professional development workshop on customer service.
The Texas Friendly customer service workshop teaches participants how to manage and enhance the delivery of quality customer service.The program focuses on six hospitality habits necessary for quality customer service: make a good first impression; know your job; know your community; communicate clearly; handle problems effectively; and make a good last impression.
Other topics emphasized include business etiquette, phone courtesy, working with difficult people, handling complaints, cultural etiquette and communication.
The workshop is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, in the Human Sciences Annex Building, in the Culinary Café.

Alumni Association to host 3rd annual Sportsman Social
Join the SFA Alumni Association for the 3rd annual SFA Sportsman Social at East Texas's premier shooting destination, Meadow Ridge Archery and Gun. The event is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22.
The event will include balloon pop archery, live music, food and beverages. The cost to attend is $10, which includes one round of balloon pop archery.

Center for Teaching and Learning names Teaching Showcase presenters
SFA’s Center for Teaching and Learning has named the 10 presenters for the 2019 Teaching Showcase, which is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Multimedia Room.
The showcase provides an opportunity for faculty, staff and teaching assistants to share best practices, recognize colleagues' innovative teaching methods and hold cross-disciplinary conversations to create better learning opportunities for students.
This year’s speakers include Dr. Lauren Burrow, assistant professor of elementary education; Dr. Court Carney, professor of history; Dr. Scott Drury, associate professor of psychology; Dr. Hunter Hampton, history lecturer; Dr. Maggie Leysath, visiting assistant professor of art; Kelly McDonald, nursing clinical instructor; Dr. Chris McKenna, assistant professor of business communication and legal studies; Dr. Elizabeth Spradley, assistant professor of communication studies; Dr. Bailey Thompson, assistant professor of mass communication; and Katy Trotty, nursing clinical instructor.

Career and Internship Expo scheduled for Feb. 20
The Center for Career and Professional Development will host the 2019 Spring Career and Internship Expo from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in Baker Pattillo Student Center Grand Ballroom and Regents' Suite A.
Faculty and staff are encouraged to inform students about the event.

‘Crazy Eights’ to open tonight
SFA’s School of Theatre will present David Lindsay-Abaire’s one-act play “Crazy Eights” at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the Downstage Theatre. Additional showings are scheduled for 2 and 7:30 p.m. tomorrow.
Directed by Needville senior Alex Duty, “Crazy Eights” is about an ex-con, Connie, who comes home late one night to find her parole officer waiting in her apartment with a torte and a long list of questions. The interrogation and courting dance that follows is complicated by the after-hours arrival of Connie’s charming card-playing friend, Duty explains.
Faculty production advisor for “Crazy Eights” is Cleo House Jr., director of the School of Theatre. The play is recommended for mature audiences.

Dance concert performances continue tonight
SFA’s dance program will showcase the Repertory Dance Company in concert during its production of "Everything and Nothing … etc.," scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight and 3 p.m. tomorrow. Admission is free for SFA students, and non-SFA students may attend for $8. Tickets are $10 for faculty, staff and senior citizens, and $12 for general admission. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
The production will feature works by guest artists and SFA faculty from the dance program. The Alief Jazz Ballet Company, which is under the direction of alumna Kelsey Key, will perform, marking the first time alumni from the SFA dance program have performed alongside the Repertory Dance Company.

Caddo storytelling, children’s activities planned at Cole Art Center
SFA Art Galleries will host renowned storyteller Kricket Rhoads-Connywerdy from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.
Rhoads-Connywerdy is an enrolled member of the Caddo and Kiowa tribes of Oklahoma.
Dancing in her traditional Caddo dress and Kiowa buckskin, Rhoads-Connywerdy toured with the legendary Charles Chibitty, the last Comanche code talker, and was Gulhei descendent princess (family princess) for 1999-00. She has won awards for her lead movie roles, which included “The Legend of Billy Fail,” “The Alamo,” “Chasing the Wind,” “Last of the Mohicans” and “UHF.”

Orchestra of the Pines to perform works by Barber, Mendelssohn
SFA’s Orchestra of the Pines will perform the music of Samuel Barber and Felix Mendelssohn in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in Cole Concert Hall.
Dr. Pierre-Alain Chevalier, visiting director of orchestral activities in the School of Music, will conduct the orchestra performing “Sorrow and Joy” featuring Barber’s “Knoxville: Summer of 1915” and Mendelssohn’s “Italian.”
Soprano Amanda Sheriff is soloist for “Knoxville: Summer of 1915,” op. 24. The orchestra’s program will also include Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 in A major, op. 90, his Italian symphony.

Texas New Music Ensemble to perform at SFA
SFA’s School of Music will present members of the Texas New Music Ensemble performing at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, in Cole Concert Hall.
The Houston-based ensemble’s program will focus solely on music written by composers who live and work in Texas, according to Chad Robinson, the ensemble’s artistic director and founder.
Among the works to be showcased is “Whitewater,” composed by Dr. Stephen Lias, professor of composition in the SFA School of Music.

SFA to present Turner, Leonberger in vocal recital
SFA’s School of Music will present a vocal faculty-guest recital featuring Dr. Chris Turner and Dr. Garry Leonberger at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, in the Music Recital Hall.
Turner is assistant professor of voice at SFA, and Leonberger is a former SFA music faculty member who is now on the voice faculty at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Dr. Ron Petti, director of collaborative piano at SFA, will accompany.
The tenor-baritone recital will feature beloved standards from vocal literature in each of the genres, according to Turner.

In the past, buildings were adorned with gargoyles, angels or the faces of royalty. Architect Changiz Tehrani incorporated this idea in a design, but with a modern spin using emojis.
The emojis are placed in the intersections of the structure’s pillars and beams, adding an unusual and whimsical touch.
