Vice presidents to honor exemplary faculty and staff
At the recommendation of the Redefining University Culture Team and groups that participated in the campus-wide reading of Chip and Dan Heath's book, "Switch," the vice presidents are honoring individuals from across campus that have gone above and beyond to create positive learning experiences for students. The Bright Spots: Teaching event is scheduled for 2 p.m. March 7 at the Center for Teaching and Learning, located on the second floor of the Steen Library.
The SFA community is invited to enjoy refreshments, visit with honorees, discover new ideas and practices, and collaborate with colleagues at the come-and-go event.

Recruitment fair hosted at Longview High School
SFA and Longview Independent School District recently hosted an adjunct faculty recruitment fair at Longview High School.
Prospective employees in attendance had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Steve Westbrook, interim president, and representatives from several SFA departments.

Bujinkan Ninjutsu master to visit SFA
The Division of Multidisciplinary Programs, the Department of History and the School of Theatre will present “The Way of the Samurai: Lessons from Ancient Japan for the Modern World" at 4 p.m. Friday, March 1, in the Ferguson Building, Room 371.
The program includes a presentation by Dai-Shihan Jeffrey Miller, senior master in Bujinkan Ninjutsu, owner and master teacher of Warrior Concepts International.

The Center for Career and Professional Development will host the 2019 Spring Teacher Job Fair from 9:30 a.m. to noon Friday, March 1, in the HPE Complex gym.
Faculty and staff are encouraged to inform students about the event, especially those who may be looking for a full-time position and to network with professionals. ‘Three One-Act Plays by Asian Authors’ continues
A unique opportunity to see multiple one-act plays by different authors presents itself when SFA’s School of Theatre performs “Three One-Act Plays by Asian Authors” scheduled for 7:30 p.m. each night through Saturday, March 2, in Turner Auditorium.
Rick Jones, professor of theatre at SFA, directs the show, which features one-acts by Rabindranath Tagore, Mishima Yukio and Gao Xingjian. Click the read more link for information about each play.

Swingin’ Axes, Aces to perform jazz benefit at LugNutz
A fun evening of jazz featuring SFA’s Swingin’ Axes and Swingin’ Aces will be presented from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday, March 1, at LugNutz Bar and Grill.
The evening will open with The Swingin’ Aces, directed by Dr. J.D. Salas, performing a mix of big band favorites, such as Count Basie’s “April in Paris” and Duke Ellington’s “Take the A Train.” The Swingin' Axes, directed by Dr. Deb Scott, will perform more big band favorites from the 1940s, including “In the Mood” and "String of Pearls.”

School of Art to screen ‘Koo-Hoot Kiwat: The Caddo Grass House’
SFA’s School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of the documentary “Koo-Hoot Kiwat: The Caddo Grass House” at 7 p.m. Friday, March 1, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.
In the PBS film directed by Curtis Craven, a Caddo tribal elder and his apprentice return to their ancestral homeland in East Texas to direct the construction of a traditional grass house.
The film is being shown in conjunction with an exhibition of Caddo Nation artists showing through March 24 in The Cole Art Center. “Caddo Contemporary: Present and Relevant” is an exhibition of ceramics, paintings, beadwork, stonework and drawings by seven living Caddo artists.

Buyse-Webster Duo to present flute, clarinet recital
SFA’s School of Music and the Friends of Music Concert Series will present the Buyse-Webster Duo performing in a flute and clarinet recital at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 2, in Cole Concert Hall.
Leone Buyse is the Joseph and Ida Kirkland Mullen Professor of Flute at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. Her husband, clarinetist Michael Webster, is professor of music at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music and artistic director of the Houston Youth Symphony. Accompanying them in the SFA recital will be Dr. Ron Petti, director of collaborative piano in the SFA School of Music.

‘Up Close and Personal’ to raise funds for SFA School of Music
The Friends of Music at SFA will host a fundraiser for the School of Music that will give the community and contributors an entertaining “behind-the-scenes” look at the school and its talented faculty and students.
“Up Close and Personal” will be presented from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 3, in the Wright Music Building. Beginning with an opening reception in the lobby of Cole Concert Hall, participants will enjoy hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar, and bid on silent auction items.
There is no charge for admission, but donations will be accepted. Reservations and/or credit card donations are accepted by calling (936) 468-6407.

The ever-iconic Barbie doll turns 60 this year, and her résumé looks more impressive than ever.
A collaboration between Mattel and National Geographic will result in a line highlighting occupations in which women are underrepresented. The careers include astrophysicist, polar marine biologist and wildlife photojournalists, among others.
