SFA Way Award recipients honored
SFA’s Transformative Experiences Committee presented the 2019 SFA Way Awards during the University Affairs Professional Development Day.
Award winners were nominated by their colleagues for exemplifying one of five root principles of The SFA Way: respect, caring, responsibility, unity and integrity.
The recipient of the Respect Award is Dr. Peggy Scott, student rights and responsibilities director. The Caring Award recipient is Leita Moore, residence life operations coordinator. The Responsibility Award recipients is Meredith Baily, information technology services project manager. The Unity Award recipient is John Fontenot, Veterans Resource Center coordinator. The Integrity Award recipient is Grace Saldana-Romero, campus recreation business supervisor.

Wellness challenge week three rankings released
SFA’s Employee Wellness staff would like to recognize and congratulate the top three winning teams and the most improved team for exemplifying wellness throughout the Kick Axe Wellness Challenge's third week.
Mission Slimpossible placed first. Team members include Kailee Wegehaupt, Preston Smith, Hailey Letterman and Zac Spears.
Dr. Vitamin and the Aches and Pains placed second. Team members include Becky Garrett, John Wyatt, Kim Odems and Cristina Santoyo.
Bod Squad placed third. Team members include Gloria Hoefler-Johnson, Joyce Johnston, Carrie Kennedy-Lightsey and Geivonna Little.
The most improved team is Mission Slimpossible.

Faculty and Staff Breakfast planned for March 6
The next SFA Faculty and Staff Breakfast is planned for 7 to 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, in the East College Dining Hall. Representatives from the Physical Plant Department will be on hand to share information about upcoming building and road construction projects.
For a discounted price of $3, SFA faculty and staff are invited to enjoy an all-you-care-to-eat breakfast while catching up with colleagues and making new campus contacts.

Faculty to be recognized for years of service and retirement
The Faculty Recognition Luncheon is scheduled for April 30 in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Grand Ballroom.
The annual luncheon recognizes faculty members who are completing 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 years of service at SFA and those who have announced their retirement.
Formal invitations will be sent out in early April.

OMA to host annual Women’s Empowerment Summit
Recent gender-based social movements, including #MeToo and #TimesUp, will give added weight to SFA’s Office of Multicultural Affairs upcoming third annual Women’s Empowerment Summit, slated for Friday, March 8, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Twilight Ballroom.
"The summit was created to empower women and educate the community on women's issues," Beavers said. "During this summit, we invite participants to develop relationships with others who strive to make an impact, learn professional development skills, discuss current issues for women today, learn how to improve personal wellness and much more. Regardless of gender, everyone can benefit from this summit."
Event check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. March 8. The opening keynote presentation will begin at 9 a.m. followed by a breakout session at 10 a.m. The lunch keynote will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and will be followed by two more breakout sessions. Presenters are a mix of faculty, staff and community members.
The event is free and open to the public. Lunch is provided, but seats are limited. Registration can be completed online at sfasu.edu/oma. Today is the last day to register.

SFA Gardens to host floral design workshop
SFA Gardens will host a floral design workshop to share methods for creating artistic flower arrangements.
The event will run from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 9, in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building, Room 101, at the SFA Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.
Jordan Cunningham, SFA Gardens greenhouse technician, will explore the principles of floral design, including shapes, colors, materials and construction.
Participants will create their own floral arrangement to take home. All materials will be provided.

The Early Childhood Laboratory is accepting applications for all classrooms, infants through pre-K, through March 31.
Applications are available in the lab's main office from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m Monday through Friday.

SFA to host guest percussionist Shane Reeves in concert
SFA’s School of Music will present guest artist Shane Reeves in a percussion recital at 6 p.m. Monday, March 11, in Cole Concert Hall.
Reeves will perform works by Claude Debussy, Mark Applebaum, Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky, Robert Stright, Dave Hollinden and Andy Akhio. He also will perform one of his own compositions, “Scavenger Mastermind.” The piece is a multi-percussion solo that makes use of a variety of instruments including gongs, woodblocks, drums and castanets, along with non-conventional instruments such as a metal bowl and a wooden plank.

ArtsPower brings ‘Madeline and the Bad Hat’ to SFA stage
SFA’s Children's Performing Arts Series will present two performances of the enchanting "Madeline and the Bad Hat" on Wednesday, March 6, in Turner Auditorium.
Capturing the blithe yet touching spirit of the much-loved Madeline, this tale traces the adventures of a young Parisian girl who – despite starting off on the wrong foot with a mischievous new neighbor – eventually learns that first impressions aren’t everything.
The show targets children in pre-K through third grade. Study guides provide suggestions for pre- and post-performance activities and discussions for teachers to use in the classroom. A comprehensive study guide for "Madeline and the Bad Hat" may be accessed at cpas.sfasu.edu.
Performances are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Tickets are $7.50 for individuals and $6 per person for groups of 20 or more.

Winding, circular paths of a labyrinth garden are meant to be a place for personal contemplation and renewal.
The zen-like experience is taken to another level at the Cherry Point Farm and Market in western Michigan. Due to the lavender plant-lined path encircling an herb garden, its labyrinth has an added bonus of aromatherapy.
