SFA librarian finds new ways to engage students
|
|
Melissa Clark, student engagement librarian at SFA, is using visual clue cards, cell phones and scavenger hunts to help students familiarize themselves with Steen Library.
Working with SFA 101 classes, Clark uses this interactive activity to ensure that students are aware of the various resources available in the library.
“It’s about highlighting those different things and where they are located and getting students comfortable navigating the library on their own,” Clark said.
During the activity, students are split into groups and given a packet of three cards with pictures of items to find in and around the library. From specific books to vending machines and study spaces, the groups take photos when they find the specified item or location. Once the photos are uploaded, the groups meet with Clark to talk about what they found and how it might be useful to them during their time at SFA.
In recognition of her work, she was honored with a Bright Spot award by the SFA Faculty Senate, the Center for Teaching and Learning and the SFA vice presidents.

Stone Fort Museum to host third pop-up concert
The Stone Fort Museum will host its third pop-up concert featuring members of the SFA Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, May 10.
The concert will feature traditional Texas tunes performed by the ensemble, which is led by Dr. J.D. Salas, associate professor of music.
“When people think of a group of tubas playing together, thoughts of massed pachyderms may immediately spring to mind,” Salas said. “However, the euphonium, which is similar to a tuba but about half the size, has a higher and lighter sound and performs most of the melodies. Together, the two instruments create an ensemble that possesses remarkably sonorous timbre and a wide dynamic range.”
The concert is free and open to the public. Guests will be able to snack on old-fashioned picnic fare. For more information about the museum, its exhibits or the Inside-Out series, contact Carolyn Spears, director of the Stone Fort Museum, at cspears@sfasu.edu.

SFA to offer guidance for Better Hearing and Speech Month
In recognition of Better Hearing and Speech Month, SFA’s Stanley Center for Speech and Language Disorders is offering guidance on how to recognize communication disorders and ways to treat them.
“Development of strong communication skills is extremely important,” said Deena Petersen, center director. “Yet common misconceptions remain. One misconception is children generally outgrow speech or language difficulties. Unfortunately, this often delays treatment.”
With speech and language disorders ranking among the most common disabilities in children, parents and caregivers are encouraged to learn the signs and seek an evaluation if they have concerns about their child’s ability to communicate, Petersen explained.
SFA graduate students studying speech-language pathology work with and observe clients in the center to practice their skills and offer services to the community.
Nacogdoches residents who want to schedule an assessment with SFA’s Stanley Center for Speech and Language Disorders should call (936) 468-7109.
