Straub and SFA's Bilingual Education Student Organization officers presented at the Texas Association for Bilingual Education.
The session, titled "Celebrando nuestra identidad bicultural/bilingue: A case study on four pre-service BESO student officers," allowed the students to share their experiences as the founding officers of BESO in the James I. Perkins College of Education.
The talk focused on the challenges to implementation and advancement, as well as the milestones achieved. Attendance at the conference was sponsored by a Perkins Student Travel Grant.

SFA to be featured during World Series game tonight
A television commercial for SFA featuring Dr. Keith Hubbard, professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, will air during the World Series at approximately 7:44 p.m. tonight on KFXK-TV.
Be sure to tune in and see SFA showcased across the East Texas region. The commercial also may air at 10:14 p.m.

Social Events Team to host tailgate tomorrow
SFA’s Social Events Team invites faculty and staff to visit the newly designated tailgate spot from noon to 3 p.m. tomorrow before the Homecoming football game against McNeese State University. The tent marked with SFA faculty and staff flags will be located on Hayter Street near Alumni Corner.
Tailgaters are encouraged to bring games, snacks, drinks and chairs. Families and friends are welcome.
The Lumberjack Express food truck also will be parked nearby, and students will be serving brisket chili frito pies for $6 each.
Wear your purple, and have fun networking with SFA colleagues while showing support for the Lumberjacks.
The faculty and staff tailgate is hosted by members of the SFA Social Events Team in the spirit of our “SFA Envisioned” strategic plan, which includes fostering a culture of engagement within our campus community.

The SFA Graduate Research Conference is planned for April 7. Encourage your graduate students to consider submitting papers and projects, whether research-based or creative activity, for individual or group presentations.

The SFA Homecoming Online Auction will remain open until 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, and includes many unique items, such as trips, holiday gifts, class rings and more. Proceeds benefit campus organizations, including Alumni Association programming.

Basketball's Jack Madness event planned for tonight
The SFA men’s and women’s basketball teams are set to host their annual Jack Madness event at 7 p.m. tonight in Johnson Coliseum.
Basketball teams and coaches will mingle with fans before participating in a three-point shootout, a slam dunk contest and short intrasquad scrimmages.
Over $25,000 worth of cash and prizes, including flat screen TVs, an iPad, an Apple Watch and various gift cards, will be up for grabs during the free event.
Fans will have the opportunity to have their 2019-20 schedule posters signed by members of the Lumberjack and Ladyjack teams.

Pineywoods Brass Quintet to perform for Brass Day
The Pineywoods Brass Quintet, SFA’s faculty brass quintet, will perform a concert of original works along with arrangements of jazz standards and tangos as part of the third annual Brass Day at SFA Nov. 3.
Brass Day at SFA is a free, annual outreach event in which high school brass students work with SFA faculty members to prepare for region and area auditions to qualify for the Texas All-State Bands. There also will be information for prospective music majors about the School of Music and its audition requirements for acceptance.

Trombone Choir to perform new works
SFA’s Trombone Choir will perform new works featured at this year’s International Trombone Festival when the student ensemble performs at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5 in Cole Concert Hall.
The choir’s director, Dr. Deb Scott, professor of trombone in the SFA School of Music, also is the director of the Composers Workshop for the ITF, putting her in the unique position to hear and help select new works for the trombone choir. “There were eight new works for trombone ensemble, and we will be presenting two of them,” she said.
Along with the trombone choir, members of the SFA Trombone Quartet will perform a new composition, “Flurry,” by SFA graduate composition student Scott Hansen.

Nabb to perform works by Debussy, Ter Veldhuis, Bolcom
Dr. Nathan Nabb, professor of saxophone in SFA’s School of Music, and SFA collaborative pianist Hyun Ji Oh will present a faculty recital at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 6 in Cole Concert Hall. The recital will serve to recognize the birthday of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone.
Among the program selections is Claude Debussy’s “Petite Suite,” a well-known and beloved piece for four-hand piano; Jacob ter Veldhuis’, “Garden of Love” for soprano; and William Bolcom’s “Lilith,” which Nabb described as “an evocative work” for alto saxophone and piano.
