OMA to host celebration for Native American Heritage Month

SFA’s Office of Multicultural Affairs will celebrate Native American Heritage Month with a performance by the Great Promise for American Indians.

The event will take place at noon Nov. 13 at the Baker Pattillo Student Center Plaza. It is free and open to the public.

“On this campus, Native American students comprise a little less than 1% of the population. Although that number is small, we must realize the importance of understanding all cultures represented in society and especially SFA,” said Veronica Beavers, OMA director. “In addition, there is Native American tribal land located within East Texas. It is important not only to understand Native American history, but also to work to preserve it. "

For more information, visit the OMA website at sfasu.edu/oma.

English professor to debut new play at local Lamp-Lite Theatre

Dr. Ken Untiedt, SFA Department of English and Creative Writing professor and interim chair, will debut his new play, "What We Need," in November at the Lamp-Lite Theatre.

According to Untiedt, the play focuses on Alex Jones, an ordinary man who is feeling a bit lost in life when the audience first meets him.

"By chance, Alex forms an unlikely friendship with Walter, a World War II veteran he meets at the grocery store. As he learns more about Walter and the challenges he overcame throughout his life, Alex gains an appreciation for the opportunities before him," said Untiedt.

The play will run at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 1, 2, 8 and 9, and at 2 p.m. Nov. 3 and 10. A special audience dress rehearsal will be held at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 31. Tickets are $5 for the audience dress rehearsal. Regular admission is $8 for students, $12 for seniors and $15 for adults.

FINE ARTS
School of Theatre to present ‘Pullman, WA’

SFA’s School of Theatre will present the play “Pullman, WA” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 8 and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9 in the Downstage Theatre on the SFA campus.

Dr. Slade Billew, assistant professor of acting and movement for the School of Theatre, directs the one-act play by Young Jean Lee. “Pullman, WA” is about three ordinary people who try (and fail) to give a life-changing self-help seminar.

“It’s a play about the culture of ‘influencers’ who tell others how to live their best life while struggling to not fall apart themselves,” Billew said. The play is recommended for mature audiences.

Tickets are $4. For tickets or more information, call the SFA Fine Arts Box Office at (936) 468-6407, or visit theatre.sfasu.edu.
