NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Honor society collecting sock, underwear donations to help local children in need
Phi U

SFA’s Beta Upsilon chapter of Phi Upsilon Omicron, a national honor society for family and consumer sciences students, is collecting donations of socks and underwear for children ages 4 through 18 until Nov. 9 in the Human Sciences Building North and the Janice A. Pattillo Early Childhood Research Center. Collection boxes also are set up at Lumberjack Harley-Davidson, M&S Pharmacy and Tipton Ford.

The donation drive and a nap mat donation to Carpenter Elementary are part of Phi Upsilon Omicron's service project to raise awareness about the poverty rate in Nacogdoches and how it affects children. The service project culminates in the Roadshow to a Brighter Future community resource fair scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon Nov. 16 at Banita Creek Park as part of Nacogdoches Farmer’s Market activities. The fair will feature local agencies to help people in need and to connect community members with volunteer opportunities.

Art exhibition to explore evolution of printed illustration
Art

SFA’s School of Art and SFA Art Galleries will present the exhibition “Picturing Books: Illustrations in Print from the 15th to the 20th Centuries,” Vol. I, opening tomorrow and running through Jan. 5 in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.

Curated by Dr. John Handley, director of SFA’s art galleries, and Dr. David A. Lewis, professor of art history, the exhibition, presented in two volumes, will offer a series of “chapters” that explore the evolution of the printed illustration, beginning with the Incunabulum (meaning the first 50 years of the printed book), including the Nuremberg Chronicle of 1493 and continuing to the 20th century. Volume II will be presented in the spring.

A reception for Volume I works is scheduled for 6 p.m. Nov. 7 at The Cole Art Center. Admission is free.
