NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Beyond the Classroom Report now available

Each year, the Division of University Affairs releases its Beyond the Classroom Report, which provides assessment data about what students learn from their experiences outside the classroom. Data is collected through various means within the Division of University Affairs, including surveys, focus groups, student success data, rubric analyses of artifacts of learning and mixed methods projects. All programs are required to develop and test learning outcomes, and each major program is required to assess these learning outcomes each year.

The division also has advanced five key performance indicators, which include students’ commitment to persistence, awareness of resources, perceptions of campus safety, commitment to diversity and awareness of cocurricular learning. These are measured in all areas. The performance indicators help determine the effectiveness of the division’s programs in meeting its mission.

Charitable campaign to benefit agencies and nonprofit organizations across Texas
SECC

SFA’s State Employee Charitable Campaign leaders want to remind you about the annual charity campaign, which benefits various agencies and nonprofit organizations across Texas. In the past, SFA employees contributed more than $20,000 to various agencies across Texas. This year, the goal is to raise more than $22,000.

For 25 years, Texas state employees have embraced fellow Texans through the SECC by contributing millions of dollars each year to provide meals to hungry children and service dogs for our veterans, support cancer survivors, and more.

There are two ways employees can give through the campaign: make a one-time donation via cash or check, or sign up for payroll deduction.

Your donations go to those agencies and nonprofit organizations that you designate. The minimum donation is $2.

If you would like a form or more information, contact Veronica Beavers, Office of Multicultural Affairs director, or Dr. Tim Bisping, dean of the Rusche College of Business, at secc@sfasu.edu.

The SECC will continue through Oct. 23.

Planetarium announces new show schedule

SFA’s planetarium in the Cole STEM Building will offer a new show on Fridays starting today.

“Birth of Planet Earth” takes visitors on a journey through time to see the beginning of the planet, including supernova explosions and the planetary construction process called accretion.

The show is open to all ages and will be presented at 7 p.m. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children, students, and faculty and staff with ID. All visitors are required to wear a face covering, and seating is limited to 21 visitors.

“The show features a spectacular, immersive visualization on how Earth was assembled billions of years ago,” said Ed Michaels, planetarium director.

The show will be offered through Dec. 11, closing Nov. 20 through 29 for Thanksgiving.

SFA to host annual Tunnel of Oppression event virtually

The Office of Multicultural Affairs and Lumberjack Cultural Association are virtually hosting the Tunnel of Oppression from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 2 and 3 on Zoom.

“The Tunnel of Oppression is an enlightening and eye-opening experience that gives individuals who attend an insight on current topics that are affecting the world that they may be unaware of,” said Breanna Moore, LCA president.

The annual interactive museum spotlights different forms of oppression through theatre and multimedia presentations. In the past, the event has shed light on issues such as human trafficking, genocide, racial profiling and suicide.

“I want attendees to learn about different events and social topics and acknowledge the different forms of oppression that do not affect them directly,” Moore said.

The event is free and open to the public. However, due to the seriousness of the topics, children younger than 13 should attend with a parent or guardian.

To register for the event, visit sfasu.edu/oma. For more information, contact the Office of Multicultural Affairs at (936) 468-1073 or oma@sfasu.edu.

A Cappella Choir to perform new music written in response to pandemic

SFA’s A Cappella Choir will present a virtual concert entitled “Autumn Splendor and Solemn Ritual” when the ensemble performs at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18.

The choir will perform works by composers from Slovenia, Germany, Italy and Norway, along with new music written in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Dr. Michael Murphy, director of choral activities in the SFA School of Music.

“The choral works represented on this concert are inspired from festive and solemn rituals composed from the 18th century to just a couple of weeks ago,” Murphy said.

The choir will dedicate “In Remembrance” by American composer Jeffery Ames “to all those who have lost their lives to COVID-19,” Murphy said. Dr. Charles Gavin, professor of horn at SFA, will join the choir for the tribute.

Obtain free access to the online, livestreamed concert by visiting music.sfasu.edu on the night of the performance. For more information about the School of Music, contact (936) 468-4602.
