Olson Beal and Burrow recently co-authored a chapter for "The Power of Community-Engaged Teacher Preparation," which will be available June 11. The chapter includes additional community co-authors Linda Autrey, Nacogdoches ISD director of advanced academics; Amber Teal, Nacogdoches native and mother of two children; and Crystal Hicks, Nacogdoches Public Library assistant director.

The chapter, "The Community as Textbook: Preparing Community-Engaged Teachers," describes the work the Community Responsiveness and Engaged Advocacy in Teacher Education, or C.R.E.A.T.E., program has completed with the pre-service teacher candidates in terms of preparing them to engage in appropriate, effective ways with community members outside the school setting.

Faculty Senate meeting slated for today

The fifth regularly scheduled meeting of the SFA Faculty Senate for the 2020-21 academic year will be held at 2:30 p.m. today via Zoom. The March meeting is a week early due to spring break. Visitors may attend at the beginning of the meeting. However, the business portion after the break is open only to faculty members.

Drs. Scott Gordon, SFA president, and Steve Bullard, provost and vice president of academic affairs, are expected to provide updates. Dr. Brandon Frye, vice president for student affairs, and Carrie Charley, director of auxiliary services, are expected to make presentations and answer questions. Athletic Director Ryan Ivey also is expected to visit this meeting.

The senate will consider a proposed constitutional amendment and changes to the senate’s standing rules.

The senate will continue work on the draft of the shared governance document.

March Brave Space explores adding value to SFA experience

SFA's Office of Multicultural Affairs will present “Student Guide to Surviving Your PWI,” the second installment in its Brave Space Series of the spring semester, at 4 p.m. today.

The Brave Space Series provides a forum for open and honest discussion concerning difficult topics. This workshop will educate attendees about the advantages of utilizing on-campus resources and opportunities available to students looking to have a presence on campus and add more value to their college experience at SFA, a predominantly white institution or PWI.

The workshop will be held in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Multimedia Room. In-person attendance is limited, so participants also can join via Zoom.

OMA to discuss racial representation in media at Something to Chew On series

The SFA Office of Multicultural Affairs will discuss “Race and Representation in Media” during its upcoming Something to Chew On diversity series.

“At this meeting, we will focus on the racial representation of Black and/or African Americans often seen in media, as well as the effects and impact it has on the community,” said Star Jackson, OMA graduate assistant.

The meeting is slated for noon tomorrow in the Baker Pattillo Student Center, Room 3.102. Due to COVID-19 guidelines, in-person attendance is limited. Participants can join virtually on OMA’s Instagram page, @oma1991.

OMA to host fourth annual Women’s Empowerment Summit
Women's Empowerment Summit

A wide range of topics concerning women in leadership, health and wellness, and other women’s issues will be discussed during the fourth annual Women’s Empowerment Summit, hosted by SFA’s Office of Multicultural Affairs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 19 via Zoom.

“During this summit, we want attendees to connect with others who are striving to make an impact, learn professional development skills, discuss the issues women are facing today, learn tips on improving personal wellness and much more,” said Veronica Beavers, OMA director. “Regardless of gender, I believe everyone can benefit from the summit.”

Student Success Center hosts virtual workshop

The SFA Student Success Center asks faculty and staff to encourage students to attend the upcoming Spring Student Success Virtual Workshop.

Students can register by visiting the Student Success Center website. Students who attend all three workshops will be entered to win a student success swag bag.

  • "Seven Ways to Impress Your Professor on Zoom" will be presented by the Center for Teaching and Learning at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 18.

  • "Internships: The No. 1 Credential for Getting Hired" will be presented by the Center for Career and Professional Development at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 23.

  • "'Kermit' to Good Financial Choices" will be presented by the CCPD at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 8.

Don Derby attire and support SFA students at fundraising dinner, auction

Students in SFA's hospitality administration program invite you to celebrate the Kentucky Derby on April 9, with dinner, drinks and a silent auction at The Fredonia Hotel.

The third annual Hospitality Shindig begins at 6 p.m. with a cash bar reception featuring a bourbon tasting. Dinner, which begins at 7 p.m., will be prepared and served by SFA hospitality administration students.

Derby attire, including fancy hats, pastel dresses, seersucker suits and bow ties, is encouraged.

Shelby Sellars, a senior from Decatur, said, “We hope to wow the guests by demonstrating through this hands-on learning experience how we work together to plan and execute an engaging event with fine food and entertainment for the community.”

SFA’s Kentucky Derby dinner and auction serve as fundraisers to support hospitality administration student scholarships, field trips, conferences and faculty development activities. Sponsorship opportunities are available for the event.

The public can purchase tickets for $60, a pair of tickets for $100 and a table for six for $300 at sfasu.edu/give/hmsevent.
