Military Science hosts annual Kile G. West Memorial 5K Race
West

The SFA ROTC is inviting the public to participate in the third annual Kile G. West 5K Memorial Race Saturday, April 10.

This event is in memory of 1st Lt. Kile G. West, a 2005 SFA alumnus and former member of SFA's Lumberjack Battalion, who was tragically killed in action on May 28, 2007, in Iraq. All funds raised from this event will go toward establishing an endowment fund in West's name to award annual scholarships to deserving SFA students and future leaders.

All runners will receive a race medal, commemorative race T-shirt and event swag bag. Awards will be given to the top three finishers. There also will be a special presentation to the West family, who will be presiding over the event.

To sign up for the race or donate with a "sleep-in special" (no running required), click here.

Don Derby attire and support SFA students at fundraising dinner, auction

Students in SFA's hospitality administration program invite you to celebrate the Kentucky Derby Friday, April 9, with dinner, drinks and a silent auction at The Fredonia Hotel.

The third annual Hospitality Shindig begins at 6 p.m. with a cash bar reception featuring a bourbon tasting. Dinner, which begins at 7 p.m., will be prepared and served by SFA hospitality administration students.

Derby attire, including fancy hats, pastel dresses, seersucker suits and bow ties, is encouraged.

Shelby Sellars, a senior from Decatur, said, “We hope to wow the guests by demonstrating through this hands-on learning experience how we work together to plan and execute an engaging event with fine food and entertainment for the community.”

SFA’s Kentucky Derby dinner and auction serve as fundraisers to support hospitality administration student scholarships, field trips, conferences and faculty development activities. Sponsorship opportunities are available for the event.

The public can purchase tickets for $60, a pair of tickets for $100 and a table for six for $300 at sfasu.edu/give/hmsevent.

For more information about sponsorships, email Smith at alsmith@sfasu.edu.

Final Brave Space Series of the semester scheduled at SFA

SFA’s Office of Multicultural Affairs will host its final Brave Space Series of the semester at 4 p.m. Monday, April 12.

The program, titled “Be the Change You Want to See,” will educate attendees about how to make a paradigm shift in themselves and the world around them.

“The goal of this program is to encourage attendees to shift things in their own lives and then share those changes with the world in order to create a better society,” said DaQuan Allen, OMA student ambassador.

Allen also said he plans to discuss issues occurring across the world that he believes society needs to better address.

The program will be held in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Multimedia Room; however, in-person attendance is limited, so participants also can join via Zoom. To request accommodations, such as captioning, or to register, visit sfasu.edu/oma.

For more information, contact the OMA at oma@sfasu.edu or (936) 468-1073.
