TEACHING EXCELLENCE
Dr. Lauren Burrow: taking creative risks to help the community
Burrow

Burrow is an associate professor who joined the Department of Education Studies in 2015. Her service and research focus on service learning through community engagement and MotherScholarhood, which explores the unique realities resulting from the intersection of mothering and scholar identities throughout all stages of academia.

Burrow said this award confirms that, “I am on the right track with the creative risks and innovative pedagogy I am pursuing in my courses. It will push me to continue to develop my own knowledge and skills so I can continue to contribute directly to the communities that make up our city and campus.”

Burrow is the recipient of this year's Teaching Excellence Award for the James I. Perkins College of Education.

This is one in a series of 2021 Teaching Excellence Award features.

SFA’s creative writing program receives top ranking

Online learning platform Study.com has ranked SFA among its 2021 Best Bachelor’s Degrees in Creative Writing.

Over 40 million visitors per month use Study.com to research potential schools, degrees and careers. The Best Bachelor’s Degrees list helps users learn about universities and top programs like those offered at SFA.

SFA’s creative writing program, housed in the Department of English and Creative Writing, is the only creative writing program in Texas and one of just a handful in the nation to offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

“We create a positive environment where students have an opportunity to write in a variety of genres,” said Dr. John McDermott, program coordinator and professor of creative writing at SFA. “We strive to work individually with students, especially during the two semesters of their senior thesis. We have a small, vibrant literary community where the students and professors get to know each other.”

THIS AND THAT
squirrel

Even with his comfortable campus nook, SFA's Twiggy may want a giant statue of his own after seeing this 15-meter-tall, bushy-tailed pal.

Sculpted by Florentijn Hofman, "Shiny Squirrel" joined an oversized fox, octopus and bunny in a botanical garden in Chongqing, China. Its cheerful smile and peace-sign paw greet visitors inside the garden.
