UMC launches online project request system

University Marketing Communications launched a new project request system that allows any SFA employee to request UMC assistance through an online service desk.

All UMC projects will now be managed through the system. Individuals or departments on campus needing UMC assistance are asked to submit a ticket through the online portal, which can be easily accessed at sfasu.edu/umc-request. They will receive a confirmation email and can engage with UMC representatives through the system as well as check on project progress.

You will be prompted to answer two questions upon your first login attempt, but you're welcome to select "Skip Question" for each. To submit a ticket, first select a project type from the list of available services. If you’re unsure which area your project falls within, select the project type you think best fits and click “Ask a Question.” You also may email general questions to umc@sfasu.edu.

If you have multiple project requests, such as a social media post and press release whether for the same or different events, each project must be requested separately.

Cooking Matters program to help community members develop nutrition, cooking skills

SFA's School of Human Sciences and the East Texas Food Bank in Tyler are partnering in an effort to help curb high levels of food insecurity in East Texas through a six-week Cooking Matters program. This is the sixth year the university has partnered with the food bank to provide the informative and interactive program to the community.

Justin Pelham, food, nutrition and dietetics clinical instructor at SFA, uses the national program as an opportunity for his students to practice their newfound skills in a real-world environment.

“The Cooking Matters program serves dual purposes for SFA students and the Nacogdoches community,” Pelham said. “Students get to practice real-world applications within a national program to help build their hard and soft skills. People in the community benefit, too, as these services are completely free, and each person walks away with added nutrition knowledge, hands-on cooking instruction and a free bag of groceries or incentives each week.”

The program will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. for six consecutive Mondays from Oct. 4 through Nov. 8 at the Human Sciences North Building, Room 201, on the SFA campus.

For more information, contact Pelham at (936) 468-5892 or pelhamjd@sfasu.edu.

The SFA School of Theatre will present the student-directed full-length play “The Shadow Box” at 7:30 p.m. today and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in Regents' Suite A in the Baker Pattillo Student Center.

Directed by Houston senior Johana Lenington, “The Shadow Box” is written by Michael Cristofer. Winner of the 1977 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for Best Play, “The Shadow Box” is about death and dying and explores the end-of-life experiences for three terminal cancer patients.

“The play follows the patients as they live out their last days with family and friends while they process the reality of their illnesses,” Lenington said.

Faculty production advisor for “The Shadow Box” is Rick Jones. The play is recommended for mature audiences.

School of Theatre to present O’Hara’s ‘Bootycandy’
Bootycandy

Part of the mission of the School of Theatre is to promote diversity in the study of the arts. Presenting plays with characters and themes that reflect diversity in race, culture and beliefs is one avenue to achieving that goal.

School of Theatre Director Cleo House Jr. believes it’s important for theatre arts majors, and audiences alike, to see themselves represented on the stages of the SFA campus. That’s one of the reasons House selected Robert O’Hara’s play “Bootycandy” for this year’s Mainstage Series at SFA. The play highlights an underrepresented element of theatre: the gay black man. Among the lessons House hopes his students learn in presenting the play is to recognize ethnic inequalities within the arts and to work toward improving those disparities.

“Believe it or not, theatre tends to be very white and very straight – particularly what is shown on stage,” House said. “I’m gay and black, so I know the importance of seeing yourself represented on stage, on TV and in film. 'Bootycandy’ is a comedy, but it also is a play that presents issues from the point of view of a particular gay black man, in this particular story."

The play will be presented at 7:30 nightly Tuesday through Saturday, Oct. 12 through 16, in Kennedy Auditorium on the SFA campus.

THIS AND THAT
Origami

A little tuck here and a little fold there and voilà — a medieval knight.

We only wish it were that easy for most of us, but for Finnish artist Juho Könkkölä, it’s all in a day’s work. The sculpturist and origami wizard first wowed on social media with an origami model of a samurai before moving on to a medieval knight.
