ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Two SFA faculty members present at IAMAS

Dr. Heather Olson Beal, professor of education studies, Dr. Lauren Brewer, associate professor of psychology, and former SFA faculty member Sarah Sanchez recently presented a talk at the International Association of Maternal Action and Scholarship Conference.

The presentation, “Organizing for Action: Building a Professional Women’s Organization on Campus,” describes the creation of SFA’s Organization for Women’s Leadership and Equity.

SFA’s Showcase Preview, Virtual Showcase coming this month

College-bound students and their families are invited to SFA’s Showcase Preview and Virtual Showcase, both of which will be held in October.

Showcase Preview will take place from 9:30 a.m. to noon Monday, Oct. 11, on the SFA campus. It will feature informational fairs and breakout sessions. Jack Walkers, who are current students who serve as tour guides, also will be present at the Showcase Preview to offer tours.

Virtual Showcase will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 22. The virtual event provides participants a unique space to interact with academic departments and student resources, showcasing the ways in which SFA is meeting the needs of today’s student in a highly technological world.

Registration for annual Homecoming 5K and one-mile run/walk now open

The Campus Recreation Department and SFA Alumni Association will host the 10th annual Homecoming 5K Run/Walk at 5:45 p.m. Oct. 28 on campus.

The event brings together students, alumni, faculty, staff and community members to raise money for SFA scholarships. The 5K race includes timing, a custom performance shirt and medals awarded to the top winners of each category. The event also will offer an untimed one-mile run/walk option, and a shirt can be purchased. If you are unable to attend in person, you can still participate with the virtual runner option, which includes a mailed performance shirt.

Participants are encouraged to register by Friday, Oct. 8, to guarantee a performance shirt. For more information or to register, visit the event's webpage.

Safe space training slated for Oct. 12

The Office of Multicultural Affairs is sponsoring a safe space training from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 12 in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Movie Theater.

A safe space is a welcoming, supportive and safe environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer students. Safe space ally training is designed to help campuses create a safe space for LGBTQ+ students. This month's training will be facilitated by Veronica Beavers and Rhylie Gachot.

Register for the session on the OMA website by 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11.

Something to Chew On series planned for tomorrow

The Office of Multicultural Affairs will discuss “Transitioning from the Unreal to Reality” during its fall installment of the Something to Chew On series, beginning at noon tomorrow in the Baker Pattillo Student Center, Room 3.101.

The open discussion will focus on current college students returning to campus in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, how the pandemic affects students’ mental state and how it alters the way they live their lives. Students also will discuss what they have learned throughout the pandemic and what they believe needs to be resolved in the world.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is changing us all,” said Veronica Beavers, OMA director. “By providing this space for discussion, we can learn from each other and how to move forward. Our goal is to educate participants while also encouraging them to gain new perspectives on various issues.”

Celebrate National Night Out with UPD tomorrow

Celebrate National Night Out with the University Police Department with food, drinks and games from 5 to 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in front of the Lehmann Chemistry Building.

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. For more information, visit the NNO website.

Faculty and Staff Breakfast slated for Wednesday
Breakfast

The next SFA Faculty and Staff Breakfast is set for 7 to 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, in the newly named Eatery on East (formerly East College Dining Hall).

For a discounted price of $3, SFA faculty and staff are invited to enjoy an all-you-care-to-eat breakfast while catching up with colleagues and making new campus contacts.

The monthly Faculty and Staff Breakfast is brought to you by the SFA Social Events Team in the spirit of our “SFA Envisioned” strategic plan, which includes fostering a culture of engagement within our campus community.

Steen Library to present fourth Reemergence Lecture Series

Steen Library’s fourth Reemergence Lecture Series session of the fall semester is planned for 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, in the Wyatt Room, located on the first floor of Steen Library.

Joseph Stepniewski, visiting assistant professor of mass communication, will present "Finding Truth and Meaning in a Cynical Fake News Environment."

Two upcoming sessions include Jim Ewing presenting "Celebrating Latinx Students," planned for Oct. 13; and Rajat Mishra presenting "Pros and Cons of In-Person versus Virtual Work Environments," planned for Oct. 20.

Social Events Team to host faculty and staff football watch party

The SFA Social Events Team is hosting a faculty and staff football watch party at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at Buffalo Wild Wings in Nacogdoches.

The Lumberjacks are traveling to Alabama to take on the Jacksonville State Gamecocks.

SFA faculty and staff who present their campus IDs will receive a 10% discount during the event. Buffalo Wild Wings has requested a headcount. If you plan to attend, RSVP to aroquemore@sfasu.edu by Friday, Oct. 8.

Village parking garage open

The Lumberjack Village parking garage has reopened after being closed for maintenance and cleaning.

Eason to present recital tomorrow
Eason

A faculty recital that reflects on life through folk music, nature and spiritual allegory will be presented by the School of Music.

New music faculty member Bob Eason, saxophone, will perform with guest artist Michael Seregow, piano, at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in Cole Concert Hall in the Wright Music Building.

Works on the program include “Fantaisie Pastorale Hongroise,” Op. 26 by Franz Doppler; “The Solitude of Stars” by Stacy Garrop; “Alma” by Tania León; Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano by David Maslanka; and “Danse Espagnole” by Manuel de Falla. Eason did the musical arrangements for the Doppler and León pieces.

Recital to highlight works for flute, piano
Flute recital

Selected works for flute and piano by Eric Ewazen, Jake Heggie and Stephen Lias will be showcased in a recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, at First Baptist Church, Nacogdoches.

Samantha Inman, assistant professor and coordinator of music theory, and Tracy Cole, piano accompanist for Lufkin Independent School District, First Baptist Church in Nacogdoches and the newly established Stone Fort Chorale, will present “21st Century Works for Flute and Piano.”

“This recital features three multi-movement works for flute and piano from the 21st century,” according to Inman. “All three were composed within a few years of each other: 2003 to 2010.
