Health Services now offering COVID-19 vaccination
SFA Health Services is now offering Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccinations to students and employees at no charge.
Individuals who would like to sign up for a vaccination can complete the online registration via mySFA under "Important Notifications." After completing the online form, a Health Services employee will contact you to schedule your vaccine.

Cole STEM Building resource rooms named for former department chair
SFA’s College of Sciences and Mathematics recognized Dr. Harry Downing, professor and former chair of the Department of Physics, Engineering and Astronomy, for the generous gift of support he made to the college in honor of his late wife.
The Harry and Carolyn Downing Physics Resource Commons and the Harry and Carolyn Downing Engineering Resource Commons were unveiled during a ceremony celebrating the legacy his support will leave for students in the college. The rooms offer students a workplace to use between and after classes, as well as lounging areas complete with refrigerator and microwave access. His gift also will be used to support scholarships for students in physics and engineering.

OMA to host annual National Coming Out Day celebration
SFA’s Office of Multicultural Affairs will host an event celebrating one of the most life-changing moments for individuals in the LGBTQ+ community as part of its National Coming Out Day celebration.
“National Coming Out Day is an annual awareness day to support members of the LGBTQ+ community who have publicly come out,” said Veronica Beavers, OMA director. “By supporting and encouraging those within the community to share their story, our hope is that others in the community will feel they are able to live their lives openly and safely.”
The come-and-go event will feature giveaways and snacks provided by the OMA. Members of SFA’s LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus also will be present with informational resources.
The celebration will be from noon to 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Plaza. The event is free, and the public is invited to attend.

The Stone Fort Museum to cohost free event Oct. 22
The Stone Fort Museum will host an evening of poetry, food and traditional crafts during “Esperanza’s Night Out” beginning at 5 p.m. Oct. 22.
The event is being held in collaboration with the Nacogdoches Public Library’s Big Read grant and is an exploration of Sandra Cisneros’ novel, “A House on Mango Street,” and the novel’s heroine and narrator, Esperanza Cordero.
Attendees can enjoy a poetry slam or participate in a competition to speak out like Esperanza. Register as a contestant for the poetry slam at the museum on the day of the event. Annual communitywide tree contest begins Friday
The Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture will host its sixth annual NacogdoTREES competition, a free communitywide contest celebrating the natural beauty of Nacogdoches, beginning Friday, Oct. 8, through Nov. 30.
“The goal of NacogdoTREES is to highlight the importance of urban and community trees, raise awareness of their ecological benefits, introduce the community to the field of forestry and encourage citizens to spend time outdoors,” said Sarah Fuller, outreach coordinator for the college.
Trees eligible for submission must be located on the SFA campus, properties managed by Nacogdoches Parks and Recreation or on the entrant’s personal property.

The dean of students and Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management Offices are offering free hand sanitizer, face masks, handwipes and face shields to SFA community members.

Learn to overcome stress
The Human Services Counseling Clinic will present a session for participants to learn coping skills for overcoming stress. The meeting is planned from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, in Steen Library, Room 205.
Sessions also are planned for Oct. 20 and Nov. 10 and 17.

Reemergence Lecture Series planned for today
Steen Library’s fourth Reemergence Lecture Series session of the fall semester is planned for 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, in the Wyatt Room, located on the first floor of Steen Library.
Joseph Stepniewski, visiting assistant professor of mass communication, will present "Finding Truth and Meaning in a Cynical Fake News Environment."
Two upcoming sessions include Jim Ewing presenting "Celebrating Latinx Students," planned for Oct. 13; and Rajat Mishra presenting "Pros and Cons of In-Person versus Virtual Work Environments," planned for Oct. 20.

The East Texas Community Health Services is holding a free drive-through flu shot clinic from noon to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at the DeWitt School of Nursing. Masks are required.

Fall Wellness Fair scheduled for Oct. 13
SFA's Campus Recreation Department will host the Fall Wellness Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Twilight Ballroom.
The free event will provide resources and services from a variety of SFA and Nacogdoches organizations and businesses, including health screenings, product samples, refreshments, educational materials and giveaways. Faculty members are encouraged to bring or inform their class about the event.

Athletics hosting Be the Match Marrow Drive
SFA's Department of Athletics is hosting a Be the Match Marrow Drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and tomorrow outside the McGee Business Building.
Be the Match registers interested persons to possibly save a life by being a marrow or stem cell donor. Marrow and stem cells are often the last resort treatment for blood cancers like leukemia and lymphomas.
Registration is quick and painless — it only takes a cheek swab.

Recital to highlight works for flute, piano tomorrow
Selected works for flute and piano by Eric Ewazen, Jake Heggie and Stephen Lias will be showcased in a recital at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at First Baptist Church, Nacogdoches.
Samantha Inman, assistant professor and coordinator of music theory, and Tracy Cole, piano accompanist for Lufkin Independent School District, First Baptist Church in Nacogdoches and the newly established Stone Fort Chorale, will present “21st Century Works for Flute and Piano.”
“This recital features three multi-movement works for flute and piano from the 21st century,” according to Inman. “All three were composed within a few years of each other: 2003 to 2010.

Chamber Singers to perform Byrd’s Mass for Four Voices, other works
The Chamber Singers will present the program “Haste On, my Joys!” when the student choral ensemble performs at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, in Cole Concert Hall.
The first half of the concert will feature William Byrd’s Mass for Four Voices. Following intermission, the ensemble will sing the choral music of Gerald Finzi, Paul Siskind, Felix Mendelssohn, Stephen Paulus and Howard Hanson. The Chamber Singers will perform a world premiere of Texas composer James Syler’s setting of Charles Anthony Silvestri’s “When All Falls Silent.”
