Dr. I-Kuai Hung receives national award for forestry education

Dr. I-Kuai Hung, Lacy H. Hunt Professor of geospatial sciences at SFA, was awarded the 2021 Carl Alwin Schenck Award from the Society of American Foresters during the virtual SAF National Convention held the first week of November.

The national award recognizes individuals who display a notable and sustained record of excellence in forestry education through outstanding service to the field and the development of dynamic, personal teaching methods.

“As my career developed, I discovered the most rewarding job I can possibly get — teaching,” Hung said. “Today, it is my students and my colleagues who keep me moving forward.”

Faragó will be one of nine storytellers participating in an evening of storytelling planned for 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, at Tyler Junior College’s Rogers Palmer Performing Arts Center and online.

Out of The Loop Season 6: True stories from Tyler and East Texas is an evening of brave, moving, relatable stories about life in Tyler and East Texas.

Beverly Jackson, clinical instructor of education studies

Jackson will coach at the Youth Nationals Goalball Tournament planned for Friday and Saturday, Nov. 5-6, at the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Austin.

Goalball is a Paralympic sport created to help rehabilitate World War II veterans blinded during the war but has grown in popularity with the blind and visually impaired community. This sport enables those who are blind and visually impaired to be part of an organized team and reap the benefits of participating in a team sport.

Jackson started a goalball program in the Round Rock/Austin area in 2007. Her team, the Central TX Avengers, consists of players ages 10 and up from public schools in the Austin area.

Richardson recently served as a guest trainer for Academic Assistance and Resource Center tutors in the area of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Richardson underscored the importance of meeting students where they are and tailoring assistance to the individual's learning goals. He suggested tutors demonstrate their own mental processing to students and share with their clients that frustration is a natural part of learning.

The training session was a part of certification for advanced tutoring with the International Tutor Training Program.

Dr. Sudeshna Roy, professor of communication studies

Roy's article, "Depiction of sexual violence in Indian films: Viewing from and in a man/patriarch’s world," was published in the Journal of Media Ethics.

The article argues the ideology of underlying misogyny that is glorified, normalized and explained blithely in Indian films needs to be dismantled from within using positive, harmless and uplifting representation that focuses on issues such as sexual violence solely for the purpose of minimizing and eradicating them.

Runnels was recently featured as the "Ask the Expert" in an article about 2021's best winter holiday destinations on WalletHub.com.

The article features winter travel hot spots, tips on how to save money, and do's and don'ts of winter traveling.

Two faculty members selected to present at national conference

Dr. Summer Pannell and Dr. Brian Uriegas, faculty members in the Department of Human Services and Educational Leadership, conducted a study with Dr. Juliann Sergi McBrayer of Georgia Southern University to explore the cultural competence levels of school principals in the southern region.

The researchers were accepted to present the findings of this study to the National Forum to Advance Rural Education.

As part of our SFA community, your feedback is a crucial part of the university’s future. Hanover Research is conducting a survey on behalf of SFA's Division of University Marketing Communications to understand perceptions of and engagement with the institution among employees, alumni, donors and friends of SFA.

This study is primarily for research purposes, so we encourage you to be candid in your confidential responses.

UMC is asking faculty and staff to take a moment to fill out this survey, which should only take a few minutes to complete. At the end of the survey, you can enter into a drawing for the chance to win a Lumberjack bobblehead.

Reemergence Lecture Series planned for today

Steen Library’s Reemergence Lecture Series will return from 3 to 5 p.m. today in the Wyatt Room, located on the first floor of Steen Library.

Dr. Devin Volding, adjunct faculty member in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Science, will present "Emerging Themes After 21 Months on the Front Lines in Houston Methodist Hospital: Perseverance and Resiliency."

Future sessions also are planned for Nov. 10 and 17, as well as Dec. 1.

International students to host presentation on their home country of Tunisia

Two SFA organizations hosting Move and Groove 5K
5K

SFA's Organization of Athletic Training Students and Chi Tau Epsilon dance honor society are holding the second annual Move and Groove 5K at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, in Pecan Park.

The entry fee is $15 for SFA students and $20 for the general public. Money raised from the 5K will cover race expenses and support the professional development and socialization efforts of SFA's dance and athletic training students. There will be prizes for top finishers.

A stretch and warmup session will start 7 a.m. with the race beginning at 7:30 a.m. The route does not leave Pecan Park.

To preregister and receive an event T-shirt, fill out the event registration Qualtrics form. If you selected Venmo as your method of payment, Venmo your registration fee to @chitauepsilon-omicronchapter. If you selected to pay by check, make your check payable to OATS (Organization of Athletic Training Students) and deliver to the Department of Kinesiology and Health Science office, located in the HPE Complex, Room 204.

Office of Admissions seeking volunteers for Showcase Saturday

The Office of Admissions is seeking volunteers for the upcoming Showcase Saturday slated for Nov. 13.

The event marks the first time since February 2020 that SFA will host an in-person, on-campus Showcase Saturday event, offering college-bound students and their families a unique opportunity to experience life as a Lumberjack.

SFA Gardens to host wreath-making and natural crafts workshop

SFA Gardens will host the wreath-making seminar “Deck the Halls: Using Evergreens to Decorate for the Holidays” from 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 11 at the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.

Evergreen branches and garlands once served as symbols of enduring life and a fruitful year to come. Dawn Stover, SFA Gardens research associate, will teach participants how to create elegant wreaths and garlands using these and other materials from the garden.

The cost is $30 for SFA Garden members and $40 for nonmembers. Class size is limited. To register in advance, call (936) 468-4129, or email romigad@sfasu.edu.

Art installation students to exhibit at Fire House Nac

Installation students in the School of Art will exhibit their installation artworks starting Friday, Nov. 5, at Fire House Nac in downtown Nacogdoches. “SFA Exhibition: Installation Art” will show through Nov. 20.

An opening reception is planned for 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, at Fire House Nac, located at 708 Swift St. The exhibition opening will feature the performance “Cocktails on the Veranda” by Catherine Pears with her character Virginia Lee Sutherlin at 6:30 p.m.

Cello Club to perform works by Elgar, Williams, Richter

The Cello Club will present “Abiding Melodies – Harry Potter Listening to Elgar” when the collaborative group of cellists from throughout East Texas performs at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, in Cole Concert Hall.

An endeavor begun in 2014 by Dr. Evgeni Raychev, cello instructor in the School of Music, Cello Club has brought together up to 40 cellists at a time to collaborate on various themed concerts.

School of Art, Cole Art Center to participate in Día de Los Muertos Fiesta

SFA's School of Art and The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House will host several events as part of the Día de Los Muertos Fiesta from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, in downtown Nacogdoches.

Día de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a two-day holiday that honors family members and loved ones who have died. The tradition originated in Mexico and is celebrated throughout Latin America. The Día de Los Muertos Fiesta has been an annual event in Nacogdoches for almost a decade.

SFA students, faculty and staff will lead workshops and presentations throughout the event.

Stone Fort Wind Quintet to perform works by Delaney, Jenkins, Harberg

SFA’s Stone Fort Wind Quintet will present its fall recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 8, in Cole Concert Hall.

The quintet is comprised of SFA School of Music faculty members Christina Guenther, flute; Graham Mackenzie, oboe; Christopher Ayer, clarinet; Andrea Denis, horn; and Margaret Fay, bassoon.

This concert of the Stone Fort Wind Quintet is the premiere performance for three new faculty members – Mackenzie, Denis and Fay.

Lily, a Labrador retriever, is a service dog in more ways than one.

The sweet canine assists owner Bridget Evans as a mobility service dog, and also assists Kinley, a yellow Lab who is deaf. "Booping" Kinley on the nose when it's time for a walk is one of the many ways Lily helps her fur sister.
