ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Lee recently visited Korea to perform for and teach students.

During her trip, she visited institutions such as Pusan National University, Mokwon University, Kaywon Arts High School and Gimcheon Arts High School. Lee performed recitals, gave presentations on studying abroad, and taught masterclasses to high school, undergraduate and graduate piano students.

Upcoming meeting to host university president; nominations for elections open

Staff Council will host Interim President Dr. Steve Westbrook during its upcoming meeting planned for Monday, June 13, in McGee Business Building, Room 133, and online. Zoom information will be shared via email.

If you would like to be a part of the Staff Council’s ongoing efforts to advocate for campus improvement, see the Staff Council Elections page for details about submitting a nomination. Nominations for representatives will remain open through June 17 and elections will be held in July.

Two new engineering degrees to be offered this fall

Two new Bachelor of Science degrees will be added to SFA’s offerings in the fall. The Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering and Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering will be housed in the College of Sciences and Mathematics and taught by faculty members in the Department of Physics, Engineering and Astronomy.

The Southern Association of College and Schools Commission on Colleges approved the new degree programs in June. Students can now enroll in the programs and begin working toward their degree when the fall semester begins Aug. 22.

SFA Charter School named state’s second best of its kind

SFA’s Charter School was recently ranked the second best charter elementary school in Texas by U.S. News & World Report. The high ranking also marks the school’s first appearance on the media company’s gold standard list.

“It is with great pride that we receive this wonderful news regarding our ranking,” said Lysa Hagan, CEO and principal of the school. “This recognition belongs first to our dedicated, hard-working students who truly want to learn. Secondly, our success rests on the shoulders of our parents, who get them to school each day and support reading at home. Lastly, we have an exceptional group of teachers who support learning in the classrooms through rigor, urgency and a constructivist learning environment.”

The K-5 school is also listed as the fourth best in the state by educational rating agency Niche.

School of Social Work to host 47th annual conference

The School of Social Work will host the 47th Annual National Institute on Social Work and Human Services in Rural Areas July 11 and 12.

The deadline for registration is Monday, June 13.

Staff Council announces addition of two members

Serving on SFA's Staff Council, Ashley Ward is replacing Caleb Perkins as representative for Category 40. Ward is a clinical lab scientist with Health Services. She will serve through Aug. 31, 2023.

Travis Killen is replacing Mark Scott as representative for Category 30. Killen is assistant director of enterprise systems with Information Technology Services. He will serve through Aug. 31, 2024.

To provide fair representation, Staff Council seats are divided by occupational/Equal Employment Opportunity classification (for example, administrative support, service/maintenance). Staff can look up their EEO category by visiting the “Employee” tab of mySFA and clicking the EEO Category Look-Up link. PAAC meeting slated for June 14

UPD, Office of Emergency Management to hold active shooter drill

SFA’s University Police Department and Office of Emergency Management, in coordination with the Nacogdoches Fire Department, Nacogdoches Police Department and Texas Department of Public Safety, will facilitate a full-scale active shooter drill Wednesday, June 15, at an unspecified building on the SFA campus. University police officers, Nacogdoches firefighters, state agency representatives and school personnel will participate in the drill.

The activities and enhanced police presence on June 15 on the SFA campus are a drill and not an immediate threat.

Stone Fort Museum to host event in support of Alzheimer’s Association
Stone Fort

SFA’s Stone Fort Museum will host the event “History All Day on The Longest Day” June 19 at the museum to raise funds and awareness for the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Beginning at 8 a.m. and lasting throughout the day, the come-and-go event will feature a plethora of activities, including card games, blackberry cobbler cooking in a Dutch oven and traditional craft making. McWilliams and Son Heating and Air Conditioning employees also will be present to host a spinner game for attendees.

SFA Gardens to host Wild About Woodies event in July

SFA Gardens will host the annual Wild About Woodies event at 9 a.m. July 1 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.

The event is to acquaint nursery professionals, landscapers and enthusiastic gardeners with an in-depth look at the woody ornamental collections at SFA Gardens, particularly new woody ornamentals for Texas and Louisiana. The garden is home to a vast collection of conifers, oaks, pines, taxodium, lagerstroemia, azaleas, camellias and much more.

SFA Gardens’ lecture to feature talk on super plants tomorrow

SFA Gardens will host the monthly Les and Theresa Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.

Dr. Allen Owings, longtime educator and professor emeritus of horticulture at the Louisiana State University AgCenter, will present “Super Flowers, Super Shrubs and Super Trees for a Super Landscape.”

You can be featured by sharing about one of the following:

• The importance of acknowledging Pride Month and/or the LGBTQ+ community

• How you incorporate LGBTQ+ voices in your organization or coursework

• How you celebrate/honor Pride Month

• A book recommendation about someone or something relevant to Pride Month/LGBTQ+ voices

Social work students to present project proposal on local youth engagement

Graduate-level students in SFA's School of Social Work will present research in correlation with the 21/7 Association’s Youth Engagement Project at 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, in the C.L. Simon Recreation Center’s meeting room. Originally slated for May 5, the event was rescheduled due to severe weather.

Since February, seven students enrolled in the Social Work Macro Practice course, which centers around working with organizations and communities, have researched the lack of access and participation among youth living in areas surrounding Highways 21 and 7. The students also analyzed the impact of civic engagement on youth connectedness to their local community and developed solutions and recommendations for consideration and implementation.

Campus Recreation to offer 15-minute chair massages

Reduce stress and relieve muscle tension by registering for a 15-minute chair massage. Chair massages cost $12 and are available from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. June 8 and 15, and July 13. To book a massage, fill out the registration form.

Summer Music Series to feature East Texas musicians

Campus Recreation will host two concerts as part of the 2022 Summer Music Series.

Bryan Harkness will perform June 17, followed by J. Webb on July 22. The concerts are scheduled for 5 p.m. by the Student Recreation Center pool.

Complimentary burgers and hot dogs will be served. This family-friendly series is free to campus recreation members and children ages 4 and younger.

The cost is $5 for nonmembers.

Music alumni earn prizes at distinguished chamber music competition

Alumni in SFA's School of Music recently garnered prizes in the nation’s top chamber music competition.

Michael Chapa, who earned a Bachelor of Music in 2017, and José Barrientos, who earned a Bachelor of Music in 2014, won honors in the Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition held May 22 in South Bend, Indiana.
