ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Dr. Hacer Varol, assistant professor of physics, engineering and astronomy

Varol recently published “Performance modeling of Licklider transmission protocol (LTP) via proactive transmission of signaling segments in deep-space network” in the International Journal of Satellite Communications and Networking.

The publication features a performance model of the original and enhanced version of the LTP protocol in space communication. Results showed that the proposed proactive signaling segment transmission technique provides a great increase in space communication performance. This study is also the foundation of a project conducted by Varol and SFA undergraduate students to explore the effects of cyber security attacks on the LTP protocol.

Dr. Hunter Hampton, assistant professor of history
Hunter

Hampton was recently published in The International Journal of the History of Sport, Volume 39, Issue 4. The article, “Salvation on the Gridiron: Fundamentalism, Football, and Christian Manhood at Wheaton College, 1900–1949,” explores how the college used muscular Christianity’s intersection of sport, faith and masculinity to navigate from fundamentalism to a brand of evangelical faith that sought to influence and help shape mainstream culture.

"From the turn of the 20th century through World War II, the preeminent fundamentalist institution of higher education was Wheaton College,” according to an abstract of the paper. “From its campus in suburban Chicago, Wheaton shaped the faith and minds of America’s fundamentalist youth from across the country.”

LEADING LUMBERJACKS
Livia Pierce, assistant to the director at Human Resources
Pierce

Pierce joined Human Resources in February. The department had acquired surplus furniture and equipment to set up a kiosk for internal and external customers, but the project had stalled. Pierce took up the project and persistently worked with multiple contacts at Information Technology Services and the Physical Plant Department to clarify and confirm the needed specifications. Then she coordinated the work orders to activate service.

“Having a dedicated computer available to assist our customers with benefits, new hire onboarding, job searches and other online needs is a major step forward in our service delivery,” said Lisa Balty, senior human resources representative. “Also, our service delivery has benefited from Livia’s knowledge of the university and rapport with multiple constituencies.”

Dr. George Avery leads project to discover Nacogdoches County freedom colony artifacts

Dr. George Avery, staff archeologist and cultural heritage coordinator at SFA, along with volunteer archeological stewards from the Texas Historical Commission, began to unearth the history of an often-neglected gem in Nacogdoches County – the Sand Hill community.

Tucked between Melrose and Chireno along Highway 21 sits Sand Hill, a community established as a freedom colony — those in which African Americans settled after they were freed. To date, there are about 500 freedom colonies recorded in Texas.

According to Avery, researchers of that era often neglected or overlooked freedom colonies, leading to a lack of historical resources cataloging their rich cultures.
