Dr. Rebecca Davis, assistant professor of economics and finance

Davis authored an article for The Conversation titled “3 reasons U.S. coal power is disappearing - and a Supreme Court ruling won’t save it.”

Using her research on the coal industry, including power plant construction and retirement plans, viewed from an economist’s perspective, Davis shares what recent events mean for the future of U.S. coal power.

Volunteers needed for Lumberjack move-in

Faculty and staff are encouraged to volunteer for a shift to help with Lumberjack move-in. During shifts, volunteers can help students with their belongings; hand out water to volunteers, students and their family members; or serve as a door greeter.

Complete the volunteer sign up form to select a day and time to be a Welcome Jack.

Office of Procurement and Business Services to host training

The Office of Procurement and Business Services team will offer a training from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Theater.

Staff members will present information about purchasing, contracts, property, travel and P-Cards. Registration is not required but recommended. To register, visit the “myTraining” link in mySFA and select “Procurement & Business Services Training.”

SFA Gardens to host floral design workshop
Greenhouse

SFA Gardens will host a floral design workshop to share methods for creating artistic flower arrangements from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 13 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center.

Jordan Cunningham, SFA Gardens greenhouse technician, will explore the principles of floral design, including shapes, colors, materials and construction.

Cost for the seminar is $25 for members of SFA Gardens and $35 for nonmembers. Space is limited, and pre-registration is required at sfasu.edu/sfagardens.

Cole Art Center summer
Cole Art Center to host concurrent summer shows

The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House will host the summer shows of the Nacogdoches Photography Club and Watercolor East Texas through Aug. 19.

Amanda Breitbach, assistant professor of art, serves as juror of the annual Nacogdoches Photography Club exhibition, themed “New Beginnings.”

Watercolor East Texas will present its 35th Annual Retrospective Show featuring artwork of past winners. Cole Art Center gallery and exhibition coordinator Erik Ordaz Lozano serves as show juror.

A closing reception will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Aug. 18.
