ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Keith Hubbard

Hubbard published a study in PRIMUS on the pass rates of mathematics majors and analyzed student persistence between courses using the data collected.

Titled "The Leaky Math Major Pipeline," Hubbard's study revealed that students leaving their majors, even after successfully completing an in-major course, is a significant issue and particularly prevalent among female and Hispanic students.

Communication studies, education studies faculty co-author book chapter

Dr. Elizabeth Spradley, assistant professor of communication studies; Dr. Heather Olson Beal, professor of education studies; Dr. Lauren Burrow, associate professor of education studies; and Dr. Chrissy Cross, associate professor of education studies, co-authored a book chapter with Dr. Sarah Symonds LeBlanc, assistant professor of communication at Purdue University Fort Wayne. The chapter, titled “COVID-19 Moments: The Photographic Narratives of Resilience and Productivity among MotherScholars,” is part of the book Persevering during the Pandemic: Stories of Resilience, Creativity, and Connection.

The chapter uses visual scholarship, specifically Photovoice, to explore what empowered the authors as MotherScholars with the resilience to survive a global pandemic and what the authors' productivity looked like and felt like during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

Stallworth and Lee always go above and beyond for others regarding anything pertaining to the student center and reservations. They both do their best and give great customer service.

Staff members from a department on campus said, “We cannot thank them enough for swiftly managing our recent reservation. Kim made sure everything was handled and called the right people to help. No job was ever too big for Nick; he also didn’t mind dealing with the small jobs. We’re beyond impressed and thankful for their help.”

Campus community invited to president's Fall Welcome Meeting

Interim President Dr. Steve Westbrook and the President’s Cabinet are celebrating the beginning of a new academic year at the Fall Welcome Meeting planned for 8:30 a.m. tomorrow in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Grand Ballroom.

A light breakfast will be served in the BPSC Spirit Lounge beginning at 7:30 a.m.

For those who choose to attend virtually, the meeting will be streamed live on the Office of the President webpage.

SFA launches hub to offer students faster access to holistic health and wellness services
The Hub

SFA has combined six of its key health and wellness resources into one centralized hub so students can get help faster when they need it.

Part of SFA’s Lumberjack Wellness Network, the new Health and Wellness Hub includes Health Services, Counseling Services, Student Outreach and Support, the Lumberjack Food Pantry, and a Chartwells dietitian. It also provides access to services at the Family Crisis Center of East Texas off campus.

Weeks of Welcome events begin Sunday

SFA's Weeks of Welcome runs from Sunday, Aug. 21, through Saturday, Sept. 3. WoW events are designed to welcome new students to campus and introduce them to campus life. For returning students, WoW is a way to become involved and interact with students and campus organizations.

Showcase Saturday dates announced for 2022-23 academic year

The Office of Admissions will host four Showcase SFA events again this year to welcome prospective students and families to campus during the 2022-23 academic year. Mark these dates on your calendar and stay tuned for more information.

Next Citizens' Police Academy starts Sept. 20

SFA's University Police Department is holding the next installment of the Citizens' Police Academy from Sept. 20 to Nov. 8. The academy will meet from 3 to 5 p.m. every Tuesday. Guest speakers include K-9, Department of Public Safety and FBI officers, and activities include mock traffic stops, building searches, Stop the Bleed training and more.

The Citizens' Police Academy, which features lectures and hands-on demonstrations, is designed to provide citizens with a better understanding of UPD operations and the measures the department takes to prevent, deter and respond to criminal and noncriminal activities. The course covers criminal investigations, patrol operations, telecommunications and more.

Only 20 spaces are available for the academy. Applications are due Sept. 1. To learn more, visit the Citizens' Police Academy website.

International Friendship Program accepting applications

Enjoy meeting new people? Want to learn about the world through new perspectives? The Office of International Programs is now accepting applications from faculty, staff, students and community members for the International Friendship Program.

Group with students from all over the world to make friends, explore Nacogdoches and SFA together, and share diverse cultures and perspectives with one another. This is an opportunity to be an ambassador for your culture, and to build skills in intercultural communication, all while making lifelong friends.

To apply, complete this survey. For more information, attend the interest meeting at 3 p.m. Aug. 30 in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Multimedia Room.

Plan year 2023 starting soon for HealthSelect participants

Plan year 2023 for active employees and retirees not eligible for Medicare begins Sept. 1 and runs through Aug. 31, 2023. If you are a HealthSelect medical plan participant, make the most of your medical benefits by noting the changes and reminders for the new plan year.

SFA Gardens to host fruit research field day

SFA Gardens will host a fruit research field day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 30 featuring kiwifruit, muscadine grapes, blueberries, figs, feijoas and other fruits.

Speakers will include Dr. David Creech, director of SFA Gardens, and Dr. Tim Hartmann and Dr. Justin Scheiner, both of Texas A&M University’s Department of Horticultural Sciences.

SFA Today to publish biweekly beginning Tuesday

Beginning Tuesday, Aug. 23, SFA Today will be published Tuesday and Thursday every week the university is in session during the fall and spring terms.

The process for submissions will remain the same — submit news items for inclusion by noon the day before each edition through the "News and Writing" section at sfasu.edu/umc-request.

SFA Music Prep fall class registration underway

Registration is underway for fall classes in the Music Preparatory Division of the School of Music.

The fall roster for youth includes private lessons in piano, violin, cello, viola, bass, voice, trumpet and guitar. Lessons may be available for other instruments upon request. Group classes will be offered in piano for adults and children, Kindermusik (for students ages 0 to 6), Strings Project, children’s chorus (for students ages 9 to 15), youth orchestras and Raguet Strings for adult students.

Prices range from $20 to $180 per month, depending on frequency, type of lesson and lesson length. Some scholarships may be available to qualifying applicants.
