Dr. Hunter Hampton, assistant professor of history
Hunter Hampton

Hampton was interviewed for the article "How religion shaped BYU and Baylor’s football programs," which was published Sept. 9 in Deseret News.

Hampton, who studies the links between college football, masculinity and faith, said that Brigham Young University and Baylor University have remained committed to football and found ways to tie it to their religious mission.

Dr. J.B. Watson, associate professor emeritus of anthropology, geography and sociology

Watson was recently featured in an “Ask the Experts” article on WalletHub.com with his commentary on retirement.

The former coordinator for SFA’s gerontology program gives tips on deciding when and where to retire and how to live on a fixed income. He also advises planning for the “nonfinancial dimensions of retirement,” such as the ability to set your own schedule and determine how to live out each day – from spending time with grandchildren to volunteering to starting a business.

NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
First Faculty Senate meeting slated for tomorrow

The first regularly scheduled meeting of SFA's Faculty Senate for the 2022-23 academic year is planned for 2:30 p.m. tomorrow in McGee Business Building, Room 133. Note that Senate meetings are reverting to in-person events this academic year instead of Zoom-hosted virtual events.

Visitors may attend at the beginning of the meeting; however, the business portion after the break is open only to faculty members. The public portion of the meeting will be recorded.

Dr. Steve Westbrook, interim president, and Dr. Lorenzo Smith, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, are expected to provide updates during the public portion of the meeting. Westbrook will cover the status of the presidential and enrollment management director searches as well as speak about expected legislative allocation requests and other anticipated legislative items. Smith will discuss recent reorganizations within the library, the status of an ombudsman position proposal within the Division of Academic Affairs, and the composition of the key Academic Affairs Policy Committee.

For more information, contact your senator.

SFA-LSCO
Agreement renewed for seamless transfer from LSCO to SFA

SFA Interim President Dr. Steve Westbrook and Lamar State College Orange President Dr. Tom Johnson met today on LSCO’s campus to reaffirm their 2019 Articulation Agreement that guarantees credits earned at LSCO will seamlessly transfer to SFA for students wanting to complete a bachelor’s degree.

“The partnership SFA has with Lamar State College Orange has been a real win-win for both institutions,” Westbrook said. “The ease with which LSCO students can transfer to become Lumberjacks at SFA has created a great way for students in the Orange area to earn their four-year degree faster and at a lower cost. That is why this relationship is so important.”

Additionally, the two presidents met with local superintendents and representatives from Bridge City ISD, Little Cypress-Mauriceville CISD, Orangefield ISD, Vidor ISD and West Orange-Cove CISD to discuss how dual credits that students complete with LSCO will easily transfer to SFA.
