ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Dr. Pietro Sasso, assistant professor of educational leadership
Sasso

Sasso recently co-authored a book monograph on a grant-funded project to identify effective strategies of hazing across the P-20 education spectrum. The book also conceptualizes a new horizontal campus prevention model to help campuses understand the expansive nature of hazing.

The research monograph is publicly available through the Pennsylvania State University Piazza Center. An applied practice book is being developed from the research monograph to be published by Stylus Publishing.

NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Free screening of Texas wildlife documentary planned for Oct. 6
DITH

SFA’s Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture and the Texas Forestry Association will host a free, on-campus screening of the Texas wildlife documentary “Deep in the Heart” for students, faculty and staff at 6 p.m. Oct. 6 in the Baker Pattillo Student Center theater.

Told through the eyes of wildlife species ranging from the blind catfish to the elusive mountain lion, “Deep in the Heart” follows humans’ ever-changing relationship with the natural world. A portion of the documentary was filmed locally in the Angelina National Forest.

Narrated by Matthew McConaughey, the film aims to conserve the state’s remaining wild places, show the connectivity of water and wildlife, and recognize Texas’ conservation importance on a continental scale.

Contact Sarah Fuller at fullersa@sfasu.edu or (936) 468-1185 for more information.

Showcase Preview to give prospective students and families a snapshot of college life

College-bound students and their families are invited to SFA’s Showcase Preview, a weekday open-house event to be held Oct. 10.

The preview was added to the Showcase SFA event series in 2021 with the intent of offering a shorter version of the university’s long-standing Showcase Saturday, which invites future college students to experience a taste of campus life through an action-packed, open-house event.

As a weekday event, Showcase Preview also gives attendees the opportunity to see the campus in action. They will experience the energy of campus as they move between buildings to participate in informational sessions and may even sit in on a mock classroom setting. Smaller than a Showcase Saturday but larger than a campus tour experience, Showcase Preview is the right fit for families looking to make a quick trip to the piney woods.

SFA researchers contribute to global pollinator data set
pollinator

SFA’s Dr. Reuber Antoniazzi, visiting professor of forest wildlife management, and forestry doctoral student Tatiana Suarez Joaqui joined an impromptu cohort of more than 70 ecologists from across the globe to assemble a critical data set of pollinator and plant interactions in the safety of their own backyard during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown.

The results of the project, initiated by Dr. Jeff Ollerton, a leading pollinator researcher based in Denmark and the United Kingdom, were recently published in the Journal of Pollination Ecology, and will aid researchers in better understanding the role private gardens play in conserving insect pollinators.

Registration open for the Diversity and Inclusion Certification Program

OMA will provide the continuation of the Diversity and Inclusion Certification Program. The program is to engage faculty and staff and expose them to critical issues in diversity, multicultural education and social justice; provide opportunities for meaningful cross-cultural interactions and learning experiences that promote respect for diversity; and aims to facilitate relationship-building and learning opportunities across campus.

The program supports OMA’s mission to create a campus environment where all students, faculty and staff feel welcome and included.

There is no cost to enroll in this program. Faculty and staff may take these workshops to earn the certificate, or attend individual workshops based on professional interests and needs. To earn the certificate, participants must attend the core course, “Diversity and Inclusion at SFA: Foundations.” In addition, participants must attend four elective training workshop offerings.

For more information and to register, visit OMA’s website.
