Sasso was selected as the 2022 Faculty Member of the Year by the Texas Association of College and University Student Personnel Administrators, the state professional association for higher education administrators in student affairs and student success.
This award is given to a faculty member who teaches courses related to college students in Texas who conducts, publishes and presents research related to the student affairs/higher education profession; supports graduate students in their educational program to achieve their goals; teaches to engage students and ensure a deep understanding of course material; and engages in professional activities in higher education.

Faculty and Staff Picnic rescheduled for Nov. 18
Due to the possibility of inclement weather, the Faculty and Staff Picnic planned for tomorrow has been postponed.
Dr. Steve Westbrook and wife, Dayna Westbrook, invite you and your families to the rescheduled event planned from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 18 in the backyard of the Juanita Curry Boynton House, commonly referred to as the President’s House.

Purple Premium Cattle Sale slated for Nov. 12
The eighth annual Purple Premium Cattle Sale is planned for 10 a.m. Nov. 12 at the university’s Beef Center, located at 442 County Road 123 in Nacogdoches.
Attendees can bid on high-quality registered and influenced Beefmaster bulls, heifers and genetics at the sale, which is free and open to the public.
“The advanced beef cattle class has been hard at work preparing for another successful cattle sale,” said Dr. Erin Brown, professor of animal science at SFA. “This is one of the only 100% student-organized sales in the country.”

High school students visit SFA for College Experience Day
More than 250 high school students attended College Experience Day hosted by the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture.
High school students attended sessions presented by SFA faculty and students who demonstrated knowledge and skills taught in courses offered at our university. This annual recruiting event teaches potential Lumberjacks about different programs offered in the College of Forestry and Agriculture, exposes them to campus, and allows them to network with current SFA students and faculty.

Join us as we welcome prospective Lumberjacks and their guests during Showcase Saturday planned for Nov. 12. Shifts are available between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Comparison of Julius Caesar, George Washington planned for tonight
Dr. Brook Poston, associate professor of history, will host a presentation titled “George Washington and Julius Caesar: Parallel Lives” at 6 p.m. tonight in Dugas Liberal Arts North, Room 102.
The talk will explore a comparison of Julius Caesar, the famed military and political leader of ancient Rome, and George Washington, United States military officer and first U.S. president.

Swingin’ Axes, Aces to perform jazz favorites
SFA’s Swingin’ Axes and Swingin’ Aces jazz bands will present their final concert of the fall semester when the student ensembles perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, in Cole Concert Hall.
The Swingin’ Axes, directed by Dr. J.D. Salas, professor of tuba and euphonium studies in the School of Music, will be joined on the concert by Dr. Ben Morris, assistant professor of composition, on piano. The Swingin’ Axes will perform works by Sammy Nestico, Tom Kubis, Bob Florence and Freddie Hubbard.
The Swingin’ Aces, directed by Dr. Jake Walburn, assistant professor of trumpet, will perform works by Gordon Goodwin, Harry Warren, Charles Mingus and Pat Methany.

Presentation of ‘Lord of the Flies’ begins run tonight
SFA's School of Theatre and Dance will present “Lord of the Flies” tonight through Sunday, Nov. 3 through Nov. 6, in Kennedy Auditorium.
The 1954 novel by Nobel Prize-winning British author William Golding, “Lord of the Flies” has been a staple on high school reading lists for decades. Even those who have not read the novel are well acquainted with its title and storyline, giving it what School of Theatre and Dance Director Cleo House Jr. describes as “iconic” status.

Percussion Ensemble to present concert tomorrow
SFA’s Percussion Ensemble will perform works by Jennifer Higdon, Ivan Trevino and Andy Akiho among other percussion composers when the student ensemble presents its fall concert at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in Cole Concert Hall.
Directed by Dr. Brad Meyer and Dr. Jamie Vilseck, the Percussion Ensemble will open the concert with Andrew Patzig’s “Mrityu” (or “Mrtyu”).
In Akiho’s Pillar II and III of his “Seven Pillars,” the composer states that the inspirations for the work “are deeply personal,” written more for performers than instruments.
Higdon describes her work “Splendid Wood” as “a joyous celebration of the sound of wood,” which is “the material that gives the marimba its unique sound.” Other works on the program include Trevino’s “Space Junk,” which he calls a children’s story set to music.

Stone Fort Wind Quintet to present fall concert
The Stone Fort Wind Quintet will present works by David Sartor, Daniel Dorff, Astor Piazzolla and other composers when the faculty ensemble performs at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, in Cole Concert Hall.
“The Stone Fort Wind Quintet is pleased to introduce our new double reed faculty members: Dr. Pablo Moreno, oboe, and Dr. Cody Hunter, bassoon,” said Dr. Christina Guenther, professor flute at SFA and quintet member. Other members include Dr. Christopher Ayer, clarinet; and Dr. Andrea Denis, horn.

November’s Beaver Moon lunar eclipse, occurring Tuesday, Nov. 8, begins at 2:02 a.m. and by 4:16 a.m., watchers will see the entirety of the Earth’s shadow on the moon.
As the eclipse progresses, the moon will begin to take on an orange-reddish hue, which is where a lunar eclipse gets the name “blood moon." This is the second lunar eclipse of the year, and there won’t be another total lunar eclipse until March 14, 2025.
