Lee received the 2023 Academy of Human Resource Development Cutting Edge Award for his scholarly paper “The Effects of Subjective Career Success and Perceived Shared Leadership on Personal Growth Initiative: Moderating Effects of Challenging Job Experience” at the academy’s conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

This year, only seven out of 89 submissions received the award, which is presented to papers that contribute practical knowledge to the human resource development profession.

Dr. Carol Wright, chair and associate professor of business communication and legal studies, and Dr. Lucia Sigmar, associate professor of business communication and legal studies recently received the Association for Business Communication – Southwest’s Distinguished Paper Award for “‘Undergraduate Business Majors’ Perceptions of Skills Acquired During College.”

Carney, Broussard present at Louisiana Historical Association conference

Dr. Court Carney, professor of history, and Christine Broussard, assistant director for strategic communications in the Division of University Marketing Communications, recently presented as part of the plenary session at the Louisiana Historical Association’s annual conference in Alexandria.

Carney moderated the panel, titled “Promised Land: New Directions in Cajun and Zydeco Music, Culture, and Historiography.” Broussard was one of four discussants from institutions including George Mason University, Grambling State University, and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

Professional development series begins today

The Student Affairs Professional Development Committee will host the second installment of its Management Brown Bag Series from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. today in the McGee Business Building, Room 133.

This professional development series is meant for those who manage diverse teams composed of students, graduate students and full-time staff members with various levels of experience. The goal of this workshop is to expand the toolkit with techniques to motivate teams, increase productivity and create a more engaging workplace.

The three panelists serve as managers in large corporations and will share best practices as well as motivational and inspirational concepts they use to manage their teams. The panelists are:

• Michael Almazan, senior director of operations, E-Tech Global Services

• Veronica Chimney, chief human resources officer, E-Tech Global Services

• Erika Tolar, national vice president of sales, Forward Air Corporation

CCPD to host two more career fairs this spring

The Center for Career and Professional Development spring Career Fair series features two more opportunities for students to connect with potential employers hiring for full-time jobs or internships. Faculty and staff are encouraged to inform students about the events.

• 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today - Agriculture Career Fair at the Agriculture Building

• 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, April 14 - Teacher Career Fair at the Baker Pattillo Student Center, Grand Ballroom and Twilight Ballroom

Summer and fall registration begins tomorrow

Registration for summer and fall 2023 classes will begin tomorrow. Note that registration will begin on the same date for both semesters to enable students to complete their registration with fewer steps and to enhance the overall registration process for students.

Advising

• Students must consult with their academic advisor and have their advising holds (and any other registration holds) cleared prior to registering for classes.

• Registration time tickets will be posted to student accounts today. As a reminder, this is the earliest that time tickets can be posted since registration for Spring II is still underway.

Registration

• Students may register at any time after the date and time listed on their registration time ticket. Students can check their registration time ticket via mySFA. On the "Registration" tab, in the "Steps to Register" section, click "Check Registration Status/Time Ticket."

• Registration will open based on the standard priority schedule.

Schedule of classes

• The summer and fall 2023 schedule of classes is now available through mySFA. On the "Registration" tab, in the "Steps to Register" section, click "View Schedule of Classes."

• Departments may update their class schedule information, so refer to the online class schedule for up-to-date information.

Human Resources to offer training sessions for new toolkit for hiring

For those involved in the interview and hiring process, Human Resources is hosting training sessions for its new toolkit. The session goes through the hiring process from start to finish.

Register for training in mySFA. Go to “Employee,” then “myTraining.” Then, click “Browse for Training” and search for “Hiring Manager Toolkit.”

Training is planned for 3:30 p.m. April 12 and 10 a.m. May 10 in Austin Building, Room 101.

School of Human Sciences hosts annual Kentucky Derby fundraiser

Hosted by SFA's hospitality program, the fifth annual Kentucky Derby dinner and auction is set for 6 p.m. April 14 at the Fredonia Hotel.

Tentatively themed “Spring Day at the Derby,” the event will feature a four-course dining experience inspired by traditional Kentucky Derby dishes. A cocktail reception with a cash bar will take place at 6 p.m., and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Silent and live auctions will take place throughout the evening.

Guests are encouraged to wear traditional derby attire, which includes wide-brimmed hats, bow ties and colorful dresses. Tickets are $60 per person, $100 for couples and $400 for a table of eight and must be purchased in advance at sfasu.edu/give/hmsevent.

Texas Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics president visits SFA
president

Sarah Ryan, an alumna of SFA’s James I. Perkins College of Education, recently returned to campus to speak to nutrition and dietetics students in the School of Human Sciences.

Ryan, who graduated in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in food and nutrition and again in 2013 with a master’s degree in human sciences, is now president of the Texas Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. As an SFA undergraduate, she served as a student regent.

Stanley Center for Speech and Language Disorders hosting weekly voice clinic to assess vocal health

SFA’s Stanley Center for Speech and Language Disorders will host a voice screening clinic that’s free and open to the public this semester before being offered for a fee at some point after the introductory spring period.

The clinic will assess the human voice and how it functions. The goal of the clinic is to find voice disorders and study how they can affect one’s work performance and quality of life. The clinics are being conducted within the communication sciences and disorders program in SFA's Department of Human Services and Educational Leadership.

The clinics will take place each Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Human Services Building, Suite 202.

Construction management program joins Associated Builders and Contractors

The construction management program in the James I. Perkins College of Education recently became a member of Associated Builders and Contractors, a national trade association with more than 22,000 members.

Officers of the association’s Houston chapter came to Nacogdoches to meet faculty members and host a construction industry panel for students and community members. The next day, both the construction management and interior design programs hosted a career fair in SFA’s Baker Pattillo Student Center.

A Cappella Choir to present ‘The Spark Within Us’ today

The A Cappella Choir will present the concert program “The Spark Within Us” at 7:30 p.m. today in Cole Concert Hall.

The program features the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, Moses Hogan, Wolfram Buchenberg, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Dan Forrest and more.

Dr. Michael Murphy, director of choral activities, conducts the A Cappella Choir, which will be accompanied by Dr. Ron Petti, collaborative pianist. Guest performer is Dr. Rafael Scarfullery, guitar. The SFA Repertory Dance Company, with choreography by Haley Hoss Jameson and Jessica Thomas, will also perform.

Opera Theater to present Bizet’s ‘Carmen’

The story of an entrancing and free-spirited girl and the inexorable impact of fate is featured when SFA's School of Music presents Georges Bizet’s opera “Carmen.” Based on a novella by Prosper Mérimée, “Carmen” will run nightly March 30 through April 1 in Cole Concert Hall. Performances are at 7:30 p.m.

“‘Carmen’ is an opera full of spectacle, love, jealousy, ambition, beautiful music and dramatic conflict,” said Richard Berry, professor of voice and opera theater director.
