ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Dr. Lauren Burrow, associate professor of education studies

As part of the events celebrating the National Art Education Association’s 75th anniversary, Burrow spoke at the association’s virtual town hall event, “Leading with Creativity.” She talked about her continued efforts to lead, inspire and encourage colleagues to leverage creativity as a foundational practice in teaching and learning. Burrow is a creative ambassador in a program cosponsored by the art association and Crayola Education.

Zamadar received patents from the trademark offices of both India and South Africa for his invention in regard to methods and compositions for therapeutic treatment to slow or stop the progressions of bacteria and cancers, and for fluorescence diagnosis.

Dr. Michele Harris, associate dean and professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and undergraduate students Aqeeb Ali and Jacob Herschmann provided technical support throughout the patent process. Retired patent attorney Tom Pruitt helped file the patent applications.

NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Department of Computer Science to host annual conference

SFA’s Department of Computer Science is hosting the annual conference for the Consortium for Computing Sciences in College, South Central Region, from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. March 31 in the Cole STEM Building.

The consortium’s focus is to promote teaching pedagogies in the computer science discipline. During the conference, guests will be able to attend faculty paper presentations, undergraduate poster presentations and a seminar by keynote speaker, Paul Gault, director of learning and leadership development for tech firm Provalus.

Conference chair and SFA lecturer, Anne Marie Eubanks, states that the undergraduate poster session is “a great opportunity for our students to show off their undergraduate research” and encourages students to register for the conference. Students seeking to have their registration paid for should come to STEM 312 during normal business hours and the department can register them for the conference.

Support site launched for ChatGPT, info session slated for next week

The Center for Teaching and Learning has launched a ChatGPT support site and is hosting a professional development session to discuss the technology’s potential use as a classroom tool and to determine best practices for fostering responsible student use.

ChatGPT is an AI chatbot developed by OpenAI that launched late last fall. The new support site will provide an overview of the technology and outline its impact on higher education. Additional content hosted on the site will include tools for detecting AI-generated work, integrating ChatGPT as an instructional tool and much more. The site also will house a comprehensive list of resources for faculty and staff.

The session will be held from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday, March 28, via Zoom. Faculty and staff can register in mySFA by clicking the “Employee” tab, then “myTraining” and selecting “Exploring ChatGPT.”

Rusche College of Business names Matthew Smilor entrepreneurship center director

Smilor, former director of the award-winning Values and Ventures program for the Neeley Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Texas Christian University, has been named director of the Arnold Center for Entrepreneurship in the Rusche College of Business.

During his leadership, Values and Ventures became the No. 1 undergraduate venture creation program in the United States.

Opera Theater to present Bizet’s ‘Carmen’

The story of an entrancing and free-spirited girl and the inexorable impact of fate is featured when SFA's School of Music presents Georges Bizet’s opera “Carmen.” Based on a novella by Prosper Mérimée, “Carmen” will run nightly at 7:30 p.m. March 30 through April 1 in Cole Concert Hall.

“‘Carmen’ is an opera full of spectacle, love, jealousy, ambition, beautiful music and dramatic conflict,” said Richard Berry, professor of voice and opera theater director.
