Midgley presented two panels at the Comicpalooza convention in Houston. The panels, "Making a Sci-Fi Feature Film" and "How to Become a Background Actor in Hollywood (an Extra in Films and TV)," provided insights into the world of filmmaking and working in Hollywood.

Carney presented research related to Bob Dylan on three panels during the World of Bob Dylan international conference, sponsored by the University of Tulsa. This conference brings together a group of scholars from various disciplines to share research on music and cultural history. Carney's three papers, “Locating the Past(s) in Woody Guthrie’s 'Grand Coulee Dam'”; “‘The Laws of Time Didn’t Apply to You’: Bob Dylan and the Zeitgeist of the Discontent”; and “From Biograph to Bootleg: Bob Dylan’s Excavation of the Past in the Long 1980s,” covered various aspects of the way history defines and gives shape to the music and career of Bob Dylan.

The expansion and renovation of the L.E. Griffith Fine Arts Building on campus is nearing completion, and faculty and staff will spend much of the summer moving into the building and preparing to welcome students Aug. 28 as the 2023-24 academic year begins.

SFA partners with Panola College to offer interdisciplinary studies teaching degree

SFA has partnered with Panola College to offer the Panola Pathway with SFA, which will allow students to expand on their associate degree to eventually earn a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from SFA.

The program, slated to begin its inaugural courses this summer, is pending approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

PAAC meeting scheduled for tomorrow

SFA faculty members and professional advisors are invited to the Professional Academic Advising Council meeting from 2 to 3 p.m. tomorrow via Zoom.

Staff Council to meet Monday

Staff Council will hold a meeting at 10 a.m. Monday, June 12, in McGee Business Building, Room 133. Interim President Gina Oglesbee will provide a UT System transition update. The meeting will be livestreamed via Zoom, and the meeting agenda is available on the meeting information page.

SFA Gardens to host industry day for woody plants

SFA Gardens will host the annual Wild About Woodies event at 9 a.m. June 30 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center.

The event is meant to acquaint nursery professionals, landscapers and enthusiastic gardeners with an in-depth look at the woody ornamental collections at SFA Gardens, particularly new woody ornamentals for Texas and Louisiana. The garden is home to a vast collection of conifers, oaks, pines, taxodium, lagerstroemia, azaleas, camellias and more.

SFA Soil, Plant and Water Analysis Laboratory offering discount
Soil Samples

Did you know SFA has a soil, water and plant testing laboratory that has been serving our community for more than 70 years? Opened in 1952, the lab has provided a valuable service to the community and faculty, staff and students. Whether you are a commercial rancher interested in optimizing your hay production or a homeowner on a quest to plant the perfect East Texas lawn and garden, the laboratory can provide you with the proper recommendations.

Through Aug. 31, the lab is offering a 10% discount to any SFA faculty or staff member, student, or alumni for one sample analysis of your choosing. For more information, visit us at the lab in the Agriculture Building, Room 122, on Wilson Drive or contact us at (936) 468-4500 or sfasoilslab@sfasu.edu. You also can contact Wayne Weatherford, interim lab director, at wweatherford@sfasu.edu. The lab is open from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Human Resources to offer training sessions for new toolkit for hiring

For those involved in the interview and hiring process, Human Resources is hosting training sessions for its new toolkit. The session goes through the hiring process from start to finish.

Register for training in mySFA. Go to “Employee” and then “myTraining.” Then, click “Browse for Training” and search for “Hiring Manager Toolkit.”

Training will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 12, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center, Room 2.106, by Starbucks. Other session dates include June 26, July 10 and July 17.

Staff Council seeking nominations for representatives

Are you interested in shaping conversations that affect SFA staff members? Are you willing to serve, or do you know another staff member willing to serve as a voice for campus employees? Be a part of the Staff Council’s ongoing efforts to advocate for campus improvement by nominating a staff member to run for office as a council representative.

Nominations for representatives will close at 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 14. Elections will be held in July. Visit the Staff Council website to submit a nomination and learn more about the organization.

UMC to share special Father’s Day social media post

The Division of University Marketing Communications’ social media team is putting together a special Father’s Day post to celebrate SFA dads.

If you would like to be included in the post on SFA’s flagship social media accounts, please send a photo of you and your children, or a photo of you and your father, to Kerry Whitsett, marketing communications coordinator, at socialumc@sfasu.edu.

SFA colleges, departments, programs and organizations are invited to advertise in two upcoming special print issues of The Pine Log student newspaper.

The 2023 Welcome Edition will be published Aug. 4 and mailed to the home of each incoming first-year and transfer student before the start of the fall semester. A commemorative 2023 Centennial Edition highlighting SFA's history and centennial events will be published Sept. 18 and distributed on campus in conjunction with the university's centennial weekend celebrations.

Campus Recreation to present summer music series

Want to relax by the pool with live music and enjoy a cookout? Make sure to stop by Campus Recreation's Summer Music Series featuring local Nacogdoches artists Haylee Lewis and Johnny Mullins performing by the outdoor pool June 30 and July 21, respectively. Scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m., the event is free for Campus Rec and pool members and children 4 years old and under. Non-members can purchase a day pass for $5.

SummerStage Festival to present popular children’s musical

Summer vacation time has arrived, and that means the popular SummerStage Festival at SFA is just around the corner.

The School of Theatre and Dance selected the children’s musical “The Wind in the Willows” as this year’s featured show of the SummerStage Festival, slated for June 28 through July 1. Based on the book by Scot Copeland, W.S. Gilbert and Kenneth Grahame and music by Paul Carrol Binkley and Sir Arthur Sullivan, “The Wind in the Willows” is adapted from the book by Kenneth Grahame and the songs of Gilbert and Sullivan.

Although “The Wind in the Willows” is great entertainment for the entire family, its target audience is children who are still learning about the value of true friendship, according to Jen Malmberg, lecturer in the School of Theatre and Dance and the play’s director and choreographer.

This position is responsible for performing complex (journey-level) clerical and advanced duties by applying accepted accounting and fiscal procedures to the preparation and maintenance of accounting records. The candidate will typically perform a combination of tasks but may specialize in one phase of work such as payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, etc.

The clerk performs work independently according to standard procedures, supervises office employees and helps maintain fiscal records for a large university department.

Classroom Support Technician I, Information Technology Services

This is a technical position responsible for providing comprehensive support and rapid response for classroom technology issues, troubleshooting, programming, and problem resolution. This position reports to the assistant director of classroom support.

The individual will install, configure and provide rapid response support for classroom technologies, including but not limited to computers, projectors, audio/visual control devices, amplifiers, speakers and cameras. They will work with ITS, the Center for Teaching and Learning, and other university departments to maintain classroom technologies and upgrade selected classroom technologies to university standards, as necessary.

Graduation Specialist, Registrar’s Office

This is an administrative support position responsible for facilitating the graduation audit application process from the point of initial contact with the student during the application process through the posting of degrees and closing of the graduation class. The specialist reports to the assistant registrar.

Job duties include assisting students with graduation audit applications, determining graduation application status and participating in commencement. This candidate also will process late graduation applications as well as major and catalog changes.

The blueberry belongs to the Ozblu variety, which is known for its large size.
