Faculty members in the James I. Perkins College of Education publish article
Drs. Tingting Xu, professor of education studies; Yuan He, assistant professor of education studies; Flóra Faragó, associate professor of human sciences; and Sarah Savoy, associate professor of psychology, published an article in the Early Childhood Education Journal titled Positive Body Image‑Related Strategies in Children’s Picturebooks.
The researchers' content analyzed 50 children’s picturebooks about body image for messages around positive body image.

Herbert Midgley, lecturer for the School of Music
Midgley recently presented “How to Incorporate Music into Your Makerspace using Older Technology” at the sixth annual Makerspaces for Innovation and Research in Academics virtual conference.
During the session, Midgley covered how makerspaces can utilize older technology for creativity. The MIRA Conference brings together makers, librarians, educators and practitioners for presentations, discussion and networking.

Staff Council elections open through Aug. 2
Staff Council elections are open through Aug. 2 for staff members to vote on recently selected nominees.
Representatives are elected according to occupational classification; this election features open seats in the professional, administrative support, skilled workers and service/maintenance categories. Representatives serve a three-year term, and newly elected members begin their service Sept. 1.

SFA officers recognized for response to Rave Guardian call
Three officers in the SFA University Police Department were recognized during a dual commissioning ceremony for their life-saving response to a distress call.
Corporal Justin Henderson, Corporal Ian McDonald and Officer Elijah Lenderman responded to a call from the Rave Guardian application by swiftly and professionally providing the caller with life-saving support. The three were presented with a letter of commendation during the event.

CARRI to host economic development forum
SFA’s Center for Applied Research and Rural Innovation and Texas Forest Country Partnership will host the Nacogdoches Forum on Rural Economic Development session from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 1, at the Nacogdoches Country Courthouse Annex.
This public event will provide a platform for community stakeholders, business and local elected officials to discuss their role in the economic development in their city/county. Presenters include Mary Ann Rojas, Executive Director of CARRI; Nancy Windham, TFCP President; Dr. Mikhail Kouliavtsev, chair of SFA’s Department of Economic and Finance; and a collaboration session facilitated by Kelly Hall, Longview Chamber of Commerce. A complimentary lunch will be provided.

Human Resources offers information for those enrolled in TexFlex
Those currently enrolled in TexFlex can be reimbursed for eligible claims incurred through Aug. 31 at which point your TexFlex debit card will cease to work. Enrollees have until Dec. 31 to submit claims for expenses incurred. Funds will not carry forward to the next year, so any remaining funds left in your TexFlex account after Dec. 31 will be forfeited.

Reminder: Leave computers on for Cortex scans
Cortex XDR, the anti-malware software installed on all SFA-owned Windows and Mac OS computers, is designed to protect SFA computers and data from security threats. The software scans every campus computer every evening, so leave your SFA computers on when not in use, including weekends, holidays and summer breaks.
Computers that are not connected to SFA’s network, such as laptops on campus or at home, are not scanned automatically and should be manually scanned from time to time to ensure they are free of malicious software. View manual scanning directions.

Artwork by SFA’s Ordaz selected for juried exhibition
Erik Ordaz, exhibition coordinator for The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House and a visiting lecturer at SFA’s School of Art, has been selected for inclusion in a biennial exhibition showcasing artists in the mid-South.
He is among 35 artists selected for the 2023 Irene Rosenzweig Biennial Juried Exhibition, organized by The Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas. His selected work “N.I.N.J.A.” will be on view in ASC’s William H. Kennedy Jr. Gallery through Oct. 14.

School of Theatre and Dance prepares to tour show at Scotland festival
The School of Theatre and Dance will present a community preview at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 29, of an original play students will perform next month at the prestigious Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Edinburgh, Scotland.
The preview performance of “Grandfather Frog’s Tales of the Meadow” will be in Kennedy Auditorium, and the event is a fundraiser to offset travel costs of the trip.

This minimal-effort meal trend has folks sharing photos and videos of their visually pleasing snack plates with bits and bobs that are easy to throw together and that don't require cooking. The trend seemingly began in May with a video posted by TikTok user Olivia Maher who said the post was inspired by a conversation with a friend about how satisfying bread and cheese are.
