Van Kley, Cunningham collaborate on piney woods plant manual
For years, the lack of a comprehensive local flora manual for East Texas has been an impediment for Dr. James Van Kley’s ongoing research as a professor of biology at SFA. The problem is nearing its end as Part 1 of the book “Herbaceous Plants of the Pineywoods of East Texas and Louisiana” was published in October with text written by Van Kley and illustrations created by Bruce Lyndon Cunningham, a Nacogdoches-based illustrator.

University Services Fee to increase in spring 2024
Beginning in the spring 2024 semester, SFA will increase the University Services Fee from $83 to $105 per semester credit hour. Based on an average course load, this will result in an increase of no more than 5% in tuition and fees. For example, a student taking a 12-hour course load will see an increase of $264, raising tuition and fees from $5,300 to $5,564.
The University Services Fee funds services and improvements, such as updated technology, renovated spaces, new buildings, increased safety and other features students need and enjoy.
View a list of fees charged to student accounts on the explanation of SFA’s tuition and fees webpage.

New name and website for virtual one stop
SFA’s virtual one-stop shop is changing its name from “SFA Axe Handle” to “SFA One Stop” as the office rolls out a new website.
The similarity of the name with axe handles in SFA traditions had led to confusion regarding the function of the office. Additionally, the name “SFA Axe Handle” yielded too many search results on internet search engines for students to be able to locate the new website easily. The updated name of “SFA One Stop” addresses both of these concerns.
The SFA One Stop will continue to be the primary phone contact for the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, Student Business Services, the Office of the Registrar, and Residence Life. Staff members support students by diagnosing cross-divisional problems and providing succinct solutions to those problems all in one stop.
