Andrew received a nomination for the Lifetime Innovator Award by the American Advertising Federation of East Texas.

Jade Allen, president of AAF-ETX, presided as Master of Ceremony and was assisted by Austin Sandy, former president.

Morton’s presentation, “Creativity, The Key to Life!” at the NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation Region IV conference in October was chosen as the holdback session to present at the annual conference in April in Phoenix, Arizona.

The conference committee selects one top presentation to move forward to the annual conference each year. Morton is a past president of the organization and has served on numerous committees.

Faculty members in the James I. Perkins College of Education publish article

Drs. Tingting Xu, professor of education studies; Yuan He, assistant professor of education studies; Flóra Faragó, associate professor of human sciences; and Sarah Savoy, associate professor of psychology; published an article titled, “Body weight representation in children's picturebooks.”

The study analyzed body weight representation of characters in 50 children's picture books about body image.

SFA Today to pause publication during winter break

SFA Today will pause publication during the winter break. Thursday’s edition is the last of the fall semester.

Publication will resume Jan. 18.

SFA Makerspace to host faculty and staff holiday event
Makerspace

Join SFA Makerspace staff members for their second annual holiday event until 1 p.m. today.

This come-and-go event will showcase 3D printers, laser cutters and other maker technologies in the space and will provide attendees with the opportunity to make their own holiday ornament, while supplies last. Light refreshments will be served.

To show appreciation for faculty and staff members, SFA’s Barnes & Noble Bookstore is offering employees an additional 10% discount for a total 20% off on school spirit apparel and gift purchases today through Thursday, Dec. 14.

PAAC meeting slated for Dec. 14

Faculty members and professional advisors are invited to the Professional Academic Advising Council meeting from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, in the Wyatt Room of the Steen Library.

Makerspace faculty session slated for Jan. 12

Spring 2024 faculty members are invited to join Herbert Midgley, SFA Makerspace’s faculty fellow, for “Innovate, Educate, Create: Integrating the Makerspace into Your Curriculum” from noon to 1 p.m. Jan. 12 at the SFA Makerspace on the first floor of the Steen Library.

In this one-hour discussion, Midgley will share examples of ways to integrate maker activities and the SFA Makerspace in your classes. Come prepared to brainstorm with colleagues, exchange ideas on current and potential offerings and chat with Makerspace staff members about equipment and possibilities.

Lunch will be provided for the first 30 registrants. To register, complete the registration form.

Coursera Career Academy now available to faculty, staff

SFA is partnering with Coursera, a global online learning platform, to provide access to Career Academy, a suite of 40+ certifications made up of more than 300 short courses. The courses are taught by leading companies such as Google, IBM and Meta. This partnership is made possible by The University of Texas System.

A list of included courses and certifications is available. All employees are welcome to complete items of interest and faculty members are encouraged to evaluate opportunities to integrate these courses and certifications into existing course and program curricula.

Career Academy will be made available to students in advance of the spring 2024 semester.

To get started, follow the “Coursera Career Academy” link on the mySFA Employee tab and sign up for an account using your SFA email address. Those who already have an account should create another with your SFA email address to access Career Academy for free. For assistance with account set up or Brightspace integration, view the step-by-step instructions.

Spring 2024 LEAP applications available

Spring 2024 LEAP applications for eligible participants – SFA employees, their spouses and dependents – are available now in mySFA. The application form can be accessed in the “Benefits” section of the Employee tab. Approved LEAP exemptions will be applied to eBills after Jan. 11. Tickets are selling quickly for the University Series’ presentation of award-winning entertainment duo Dailey & Vincent Thursday, Dec. 14.

Grammy and Dove award winners and Grand Ole Opry members Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent and their world-class band will perform at 7:30 p.m. in Turner Auditorium in the newly renovated Griffith Fine Arts Building.

Works by Candace Hicks, associate professor of art in the School of Art, have recently been included in a new permanent collection in the New York Public Library.

Hicks’ “Common Threads,” vol. 132, an ongoing series of embroideries in the form of composition notebooks, is part of the Women’s Work collection within the new Polonsky Exhibition.
