President's Achievement Award nominations due tomorrow
Nominations for the 2023-24 President’s Achievement Award will close tomorrow. Eight awards will be apportioned by the ratio of staff members within Equal Employment Opportunity categories. Recipients chosen by the university’s president will receive an inscribed plaque and $750. To be eligible, nominees must:
- be a full-time, benefits-eligible staff member
- be employed at SFA for a period of at least one year as of Aug. 31, 2023
- have not received the award within the last three years
- and be nominated by the SFA community; self-nominations will not be accepted.
Nominations may be submitted electronically by staff, faculty or students through the President’s Award nomination online form.
Additionally, hard copy forms and secure ballot boxes will be placed at the Physical Plant Department, Baker Pattillo Student Center Information Desk, PPD Housing Operations and the SFA Help Desk in the Steen Library.

Nominaciones a el Premio Presidencial al Desempeño 2023-24
El periodo de nominaciones para el Premio Presidencial al Desempeño 2023-24 se termina el miércoles 7 de febrero.
El premio se otorgará a ocho colaboradores y los ganadores recibirán una placa y una remuneración de $750. Los finalistas serán seleccionados por el presidente de la universidad con base en los siguientes criterios:
- Ser un empleado de tiempo completo con derecho a beneficios.
- Ser empleado de SFA por un período de al menos un año a partir del 31 de agosto del 2023.
- No haber recibido este premio en los últimos tres años.
- Haber sido nominado por la comunidad de SFA. No se aceptarán auto nominaciones.

Spots open in Stanley Center for Speech and Language Disorder’s Little Jacks program
SFA's Stanley Center for Speech and Language Disorders has openings in the Little Jacks program for children ages 3 to 4 experiencing communication concerns.
The center, which is located in the Department of Human Services and Educational Leadership in the James I. Perkins College of Education, offers speech therapy services to residents of East Texas.

Nguyen offers presentation on compassion science
Dr. Nghia Nguyen, associate professor of education studies, is available to present an interactive discussion and exploration of the science of compassion at classes and meetings during April. The session, "The Science of Compassion: Approaches for Professionals/Students and Its Practical Implications in Personal and Professional Settings," lasts 45 minutes to an hour.
Compassion science research indicates promising relationships between the practice of compassion and positive health and wellness markers.

Slavery document research presentation scheduled
The East Texas Research Center is hosting the presentation "Slavery Document Research" from 4 to 5 p.m. Feb. 28 at the ETRC Archive Lab and via Zoom.
Kyle Ainsworth, project manager of the Lone Star Slavery Project and SFA special collections librarian, will cover the basics of tracing slave ancestry, from offering tips for research in antebellum deed and probate records to exploring early postwar resources (census, chattel mortgage and marriage). Participants will have the opportunity to examine original documents held at the ETRC.

Department of Biology to host Darwin Day
Dr. David Hillis, Alfred W. Roark Centennial professor in natural sciences at The University of Texas at Austin, will be the featured speaker for Darwin Day from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Twilight Ballroom.
Hillis will present “Applications of the Great Tree of Life,” which includes his studies in molecular evolution and biodiversity. His Tree of Life research focuses on how we can use it to understand the processes of evolution.
Darwin Day celebrates the work of Charles Darwin and offers the opportunity to reflect on the contributions of many scientists, particularly biologists.

Exhibition of works by Stringer opens today
An exhibition of works by San Antonio-based Japanese artist Hiromi Stringer will show today through March 23 in the Ledbetter Gallery of The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.
Hosted by the School of Art, the exhibition “The Dog Show: Time Traveler Umeyama’s Drawings from the 21st Century” is a set of drawings depicting a variety of dog breeds with observations by the artist’s time-traveling character Shoei Umeyama, according to Weelynd McMullan, exhibition coordinator for The Cole Art Center.

Comedian Zimmerman to perform at SFA
The University Series brings comedian Joe Zimmerman to Nacogdoches for a performance at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 22 in Turner Auditorium, Griffith Fine Arts Building.
A favorite of late-night shows such as “The Tonight Show,” “Last Comic Standing” and “Comedy Central,” Zimmerman is a frequent performer on university campuses and at corporate events.

‘Words of Art’ collaborative exhibition showing through Feb. 9
Formerly a course at SFA called “Pen & Pigment,” “Words of Art” is a student organization-led collaborative event that presents contributors with publication and exhibition opportunities.
The exhibition, titled “Co-Elaborate,” will be shown through Friday, Feb. 9, in the student galleries of the Lower Art Building on Wilson Drive. A closing reception is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday.

Repertory Dance Company to present ‘Omnium-gatherum’
New choreographic works created by the SFA dance faculty members and guest artists Elias Kababa, Lacreacia Sanders and Torens Johnson will be featured in the program "Omnium-gatherum" presented Feb. 15 through 17 in Turner Auditorium, Griffith Fine Arts Building.
"‘Omnium-gatherum’ means a collection of miscellaneous people or things,” said Heather Samuelson, coordinator of the dance program and an associate director within the SFA School of Theatre and Dance. “Our choreographic works are so diverse and interestingly different from one to the next, we thought this was a good description of what will be presented.”

Hicks’ ‘Notes for String Theory’ series to show in Las Vegas
A solo exhibition of works by Candace Hicks, associate professor of art in SFA's School of Art, will open in mid-February in The Artspace Gallery, North Las Vegas campus of the College of Southern Nevada.
Hicks’ exhibition features work from her series “Notes for String Theory.” The show runs Feb. 16 through April 20. An artist talk and reception is planned for 6 p.m. Feb. 26.
