Prepare for spring severe weather season

As part of its Severe Weather Awareness Week concluding Saturday, Feb. 17, Emergency Management is reminding faculty and staff that now is the time to prepare for the spring severe weather season.

Sign up and encourage your students to sign up for Jack Alerts through mySFA. Also, download the Rave Guardian mobile phone app. If you know some Lumberjack families who wish to receive local weather alerts, they can sign up for the City of Nacogdoches NacWise program.

Lastly, make a severe weather plan before you need it! Your family may not be together when a disaster strikes, so it is important to plan in advance. For tips, visit ready.gov/make-a-plan. For SFA’s emergency procedures, visit the Emergency Management website.

PCOE committee to host informational session

The James I. Perkins College of Education’s Access and Opportunity Committee is sponsoring “STARs Funding Opportunity for Dialogue” at 10 a.m. tomorrow via Zoom. Dr. Lorenzo Smith, provost and executive vice president of academic affairs, will be the featured speaker for the informational session, which will allow for faculty members to learn about potential collaborations for Faculty STARs and Rising STARs

Science and Technology Acquisition and Retention Program, or STARs, is designed to help UT System institutions attract and retain faculty talent in the areas of science and technology. STARs funding, which will be provided through reimbursement for expenditures related equipment or renovations, is available to eligible incoming new and current faculty members. The next round of applications for STARs funding is due July 1. For more information, visit the STARs Program webpage.

To register for the event, complete the registration form. Once completed, you will receive a Zoom link to attend.

OIP to host cultural presentation to Pakistan

Faculty, staff, students and community members are invited to the Office of International Programs’ global gateway presentation to Pakistan at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, in Steen Library, Room 103.

The event will include a presentation led by a SFA international student from Pakistan who will introduce attendees to their country, traditions and lifestyle. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

Upcoming presentations will take place at 3 p.m. in Steen Library, Room 103, unless noted otherwise. Events include:

Employee wellness to offer suicide interventionist training

Learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental illness and what to do when someone you know is experiencing thoughts of suicide with QPR (Question. Persuade. Refer.) Suicide Interventionist Training from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Multimedia Room 2.106.

Lunch will be provided. Those interested need to RSVP to employeewellness@sfasu.edu by Thursday, Feb. 15.

Career fair slated for Feb. 21
major fair

Faculty and staff are encouraged to inform students about the all-majors career fair planned for 1 to 4 p.m., Feb. 21, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Grand and Twilight ballrooms.

The event is an opportunity for faculty, staff and students to connect with potential employers and campus partners. Recruiters will discuss internship and full-time job opportunities across many fields of study.

This event is free for students and alumni to attend, but professional dress is required. For more information, visit the CCPD website or email ccpd@sfasu.edu.

ETRC to host introductory genealogy presentation

The East Texas Research Center is hosting the presentation, "Introduction to Genealogy" at 4 p.m. March 6 at the ETRC Archive Lab.

Linda Reynolds, ETRC director, will be leading this introductory presentation which is aimed at those who are interested in beginning genealogy and do not know where to begin. ETRC will consider future advanced genealogy presentations, if requested.

Entrepreneurship program, center named a top emerging entrepreneurship program

SFA's entrepreneurship academic program and Arnold Center for Entrepreneurship in the Rusche College of Business were collectively named one of the top three emerging entrepreneurship programs in the nation by the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship.

This award recognizes colleges and universities for their efforts developing nascent entrepreneurship programs that demonstrate outstanding progress toward becoming comprehensive, bold and innovative educational programs with early records of student impact.

Venezuelan percussionist to perform tomorrow
Alirio

Venezuelan percussionist Alirio José Torrealba will perform at 6 p.m. tomorrow in Cole Concert Hall.

His recital will feature performances of “Entrevero” for Maracas and Tape by Guasaka4; “Pajarillo Flamenco” by Juan Carlos Contreras; and “Temazcal” (maracas and tape) by Javier Alvarez. He will also conduct a maracas master class for SFA’s percussion studio.

School of Theatre and Dance to present ‘The 39 Steps’
39 Steps

Who doesn’t like a spy thriller? Lovers of comic theater and classic movies will be in their element at the School of Theatre and Dance’s production of “The 39 Steps,” a parody play adapted by Patrick Barlow from the novel by John Buchan and the film by Alfred Hitchcock.

“The 39 Steps,” will be presented Feb. 29 through March 3 in the Flex Theatre, Griffith Fine Arts Building. Directed by Professor Scott Shattuck, the play is full of rollicking humor, packed with “wildly inventive stagecraft” and features an intrepid group of seven actors playing dozens of roles.

The School of Theatre and Dance will present the student-directed full-length, dark comedy “The Motherf**ker with the Hat” by award-winning playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, in the Black Box Theater in the Griffith Fine Arts Building.

Directed by Dallas senior Mariano Aguirre Jr., “The Motherf**ker with the Hat” explores the tumultuous journey of Jackie, a recovering addict determined to stay on the straight and narrow.

Repertory Dance Company to present ‘Omnium-gatherum’
Rep Dance Co

New choreographic works created by the SFA dance faculty members and guest artists Elias Kababa, Lacreacia Sanders and Torens Johnson will be featured in the program "Omnium-gatherum" presented Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 15-17, in Turner Auditorium, Griffith Fine Arts Building.

"‘Omnium-gatherum’ means a collection of miscellaneous people or things,” said Heather Samuelson, coordinator of the dance program and an associate director within the SFA School of Theatre and Dance. “Our choreographic works are so diverse and interestingly different from one to the next, we thought this was a good description of what will be presented.”
