Burrow presented “Pursuing Practical Change: Championing Culturally Relevant Pedagogy in Today's Teacher Educator Courses” at the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education annual conference.

Burrow presented the collaborative presentation on behalf of Dr. Amber Wagnon, associate professor of education studies, and Dr. Heather Dean of California State University. The presentation was an overview of selected chapters from an upcoming book in which they contributed.

Burrow also was re-elected to the leadership role of treasurer in the AACTE Topical Action Group on Educator Preparation in Partnership with Families and Communities.

Lumberjack Wellness Network to offer wellbeing certification

The Lumberjack Wellness Network is now offering a Wellbeing Certification. Based around the Seven Dimensions of Wellness, this program will teach faculty and staff motivational interviewing techniques to enable them to guide students to appropriate resources and goal setting approaches.

Requirements include completing a motivational interviewing module, an emotional/spiritual module and two elective modules. This certification can be listed on your faculty activity report. More information is available on the Wellness Certification webpage.

Faculty Senate to host town hall meeting tomorrow

The Faculty Senate invites all faculty members to attend a town hall meeting regarding the creation of an Ombuds Office on campus and what the office can do to support faculty. The meeting is planned for 4 p.m. tomorrow in McGee Business Building, Room 133 and via Zoom.

The purpose of an Ombuds Office is to ensure faculty members have a confidential, neutral, informal and independent voice in regard to concerns and to resolve complaints, conflicts and/or disputes beyond reaching out to direct supervisors.

A Zoom link will be provided at a later date for those unavailable to attend in person. For more information, contact CC Conn, faculty senate chair, at conncs@sfasu.edu.

IMPACT Conference discounted registration available

A limited number of last-minute discounted registrations are available for the upcoming IMPACT Conference to be hosted Thursday through Monday, Feb. 22-26, on campus. The $75 rate includes on-campus dining, evening social events, access to all workshops and a free T-shirt on a first-come, first-served availability.

This national conference is historically the largest annual conference focused on the civic engagement of college students in community service, service-learning, community-based research, advocacy and other forms of social action.

Montgomery Professorship presentation to feature Cynthia Trapanese tonight
Cynthia Trapanese

Cynthia Trapanese, a senior lecturer in the humane education program at Antioch University, will present “Teaching to be kind: Humane Education in the Classroom” for SFA’s Montgomery Professorship for Human Education Speaker Series at 6 p.m. tonight in the Janice A. Pattillo Early Childhood Research Center.

The Montgomery Professorship for Humane Education was awarded to Dr. Sarah Straub, associate professor in the Department of Education Studies, in October 2020.

Employee wellness to offer suicide interventionist training

Learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental illness and what to do when someone you know is experiencing thoughts of suicide with QPR (Question. Persuade. Refer.) Suicide Interventionist Training from noon to 1 p.m. today in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Multimedia Room 2.106.

Lunch will be provided. Those interested need to RSVP to employeewellness@sfasu.edu today.

ETRC to host a series of workshops during spring semester

SFA’s East Texas Research Center is set to host a series of workshops during the spring semester in the newly implemented Archive Lab on the first floor of Steen Library. Presentation topics include document research, genealogy, archival research basics, and digitization and storage.

The lab, which opened in fall 2023 after an approximate two-year planning period, is in place to provide instruction and hands-on experience with preservation, digitization and research with archival materials, according to Linda Reynolds, ETRC director.

OIP to host cultural presentation to El Salvador

Faculty, staff, students and community members are invited to the Office of International Programs’ global gateway presentation to El Salvador at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, in Steen Library, Room 103.

The event will include a presentation led by a SFA international student from El Salvador who will introduce attendees to their country, traditions and lifestyle. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

Career fair slated for tomorrow

Faculty and staff are encouraged to inform students about the all-majors career fair planned for 1 to 4 p.m. tomorrow in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Grand and Twilight ballrooms.

The event is an opportunity for faculty, staff and students to connect with potential employers and campus partners. Recruiters will discuss internship and full-time job opportunities across many fields of study.

'Unconventional Contraptions and Other Oddities' to show in Adams Art Gallery

"Unconventional Contraptions and Other Oddities,” an exhibition of artworks by graduate student Dave Clark, opens with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, in the Teresa Jill Adams Art Gallery.

Drawing from his own experiences as a fine artist and as a former professional artist for the entertainment industry, Clark creates unusual combinations of elements as though cobbled together in the aftermath of destruction. The works are often made from materials that are disguised through paint to make them believably realistic while maintaining a surreal aura.

Wind Ensemble to perform Winter Tour Concert

SFA's Wind Ensemble will present its Winter Tour Concert before a hometown crowd after returning to campus following a recruitment tour performing at five high schools in the Dallas area.

Directed by Dr. Tamey Anglley, director of bands at SFA, the Wind Ensemble will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, in Turner Auditorium.

A Cappella Choir to present preview concert for national conference performance

SFA's A Cappella Choir is one of only two university choirs to be invited to perform at this year’s Southwestern American Choral Directors Association conference slated for Feb. 27 through March 2 in Denver, Colorado.

The choir, directed by Dr. Michael Murphy, director of choral activities at SFA, will present a preview concert of this performance at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, in Cole Concert Hall, Wright Music Building.

Lauren Selden, professor of art, will demonstrate and lecture on Feb. 28 in Brazosport in connection with her solo exhibition showing at the Brazosport College Art Gallery.

Selden’s “The Space Between” is an exhibition of retrospective works showing through Feb. 29. Selden, who is a professor of jewelry and metalwork at SFA, will conduct an artist demonstration at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, followed by a closing art reception from 1 to 2:30 p.m. where she’ll give a brief artist lecture at 1:30 p.m. at the gallery.

South Korean violinist Jeongwon Claire An will present “Celebration of Beethoven – Complete Violin Sonata Series” when she performs at 6 p.m. tonight in Cole Concert Hall.

She will be accompanied by Dr. Minhae Lee, assistant professor of piano in the SFA School of Music. The program will feature Ludwig van Beethoven’s Sonata for Violin and Piano in D major, Op. 12, No. 1; Sonata for Violin and Piano in F major, Op. 24, No. 5; and Sonata for Violin and Piano in G major, Op. 30, No. 3.

Schober to perform at SFA
Schober

Houston pianist Mary Katherine Schober will present the concert program “Images,” featuring works by Modest Mussorgsky, Felix Mendelssohn and her own original compositions, at 6 p.m. Feb. 24 in Cole Concert Hall.

The inspiration for the title is Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition.” “The program is essentially organized to showcase this work, as well as my own compositions,” Schober said. “Every part of the program is evocative of various images, whether literal or abstract.”
