Lumberjacks present at NODA conference

Six members of the Lumberjack community delivered presentations during the NODA: Association for Orientation, Transition and Retention in Higher Education regional conference held at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Presentations and presenters include:

• “Cyber Attacks and YOU: How to host a successful event without the world wide web,” presented by Austin Farmer, graduate research assistant; Kate Childress, assistant director or Orientation and Transition Programs; and Brittany Beck, director of OTP

• “Orientation Champions: Collaborating with campus partners and identifying your champions,” presented by Childress and Beck

• “Omega Lambda: Introducing traditions to your OL Team,” presented by Farmer, Childress and Beck

• and “Understanding CAS Standards through the Great Adventure,” presented by Jadra Jones, J. David Zuniga and Timothy Pierce, all Orientation student coordinators, under the direction of Childress.

Education studies professors receive Texas Parks and Wildlife Department grant

Faculty members in the Department of Education Studies were awarded funding through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Community Outdoor Outreach Program to support their East Texas Adventurers program, an environmental education-focused camping initiative. The funding will support the creation of four camping trips that invite students from Nacogdoches’ McMichael Middle School to interact with and learn from nature.

Students to host 6th annual Spring Plant Fair

SFA's horticulture program and Horticulture Club will host their sixth annual Spring Plant Fair from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at the SFA Plantery.

Plants available for purchase include a variety of summer annuals like coleus, vinca, sweet potato, summer snapdragon, wishbone flower and more. Students also will have a selection of native plants like blue-eyed grass, winecups and asters for sale. All plants sold will grow well in the East Texas area.

Along with the wide array of plants, pancakes also will be available to customers in the morning on a first-come, first-served basis. Pancakes will be free; however, donations are encouraged.

Counseling Clinic to host anxiety group for students

SFA's Counseling Clinic is hosting an anxiety group for students from 6 to 7 p.m. each Tuesday in the Human Services Building, Room 202. Faculty and staff are encouraged to inform their students about the group.

Conversation topics may include working through a life transition, cultivating healthy relationships and overcoming avoidance or overthinking.

SFA Gardens’ April lecture to feature management of crapemyrtle bark scale

SFA Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. April 11 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center.

Dr. Yan Chen, professor in medicinal plant physiology with the Louisiana State University School of Plant, Environmental and Soil Sciences, will present “Everything You Wanted to Know about Crapemyrtle Bark Scale but Were Afraid to Ask.”

Office of International Programs to host Study Aboard Fair

The Office of International Programs is hosting a Study Aboard Fair for prospective study abroad students from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 5, in the Office of International Programs, located in Steen Library, Suite 103.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to inform their students about this opportunity to learn about SFA's partners and to see how study abroad can benefit their educational career.

Students should complete the sign up form to attend.

National Student Employee Appreciation Week begins April 8

The National Student Employment Association designates one week each year for universities and colleges across the country to recognize, appreciate and encourage student employees.

SFA has more than 1,400 student employees who play a key role in our educational, research and operational excellence. They perform invaluable services with enthusiasm, dedication and initiative.

We encourage departments to take the opportunity during National Student Employee Appreciation Week, April 8-12, as well as throughout the year, to thank their student employees and let them know that their efforts are valued.

SFA Gardens to host annual spring plant sale

SFA Gardens will host its annual Garden Gala Day Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 6 and 7, at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.

The sale will feature an array of hard-to-find, “Texas-tough” plants, including exclusive SFA introductions, Texas natives, edibles, tropicals, perennials, shrubs and trees, with an emphasis on pollinator-friendly selections. A full list of available plants is posted on the SFA Gardens website.

Nursing students prepare for Springfest

Students in the DeWitt School of Nursing are preparing for Springfest, which will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at Festival Park in downtown Nacogdoches.

The annual event is presented by the Boys and Girls Club of Nacogdoches and partners throughout the community. Families are invited for a fun afternoon of face painting, games, pony rides, inflatables and more.

Symphony Orchestra to present Schubert’s Symphony No. 8, “Unfinished” tonight
Schubert

Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 8, “Unfinished,” will be the main feature of a concert presented by the SFA Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Cole Concert Hall, Wright Music Building.

The student ensemble will also perform Aaron Copland’s “Letter from Home” and Leo Delibe’s Prelude and Mazurka from the ballet “Coppelia.”

The Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Oliver Yan, graduate assistant conductor from Hong Kong.

World renowned clarinetist, pianist to perform at SFA tomorrow

Clarinetist Dr. Vanguel Tangarov and pianist Ekaterina Tangarova will present a guest recital featuring works by Carl Maria von Weber, Alamiro Giampieri, Francis Poulenc and Marin Valtchanov when the duo performs at 6 p.m. tomorrow in Cole Concert Hall.

The program will include von Weber’s “Fantasy and Rondo,” Giampieri’s “Carnival of Venice,” Sonata by Poulenc, and Rondo by Valtchanov.

Percussionist Horey to present ‘Yin and Yang, Marimba and Drums’ concert tomorrow
Horey

Dr. Scotty Horey, instructor of percussion at the Music School of Delaware, will present “Yin and Yang, Marimba and Drums” at 6 p.m. tomorrow in the Music Recital Hall, Wright Music Building.

Through repertoire and original songs, Horey will express the two balanced energies of his creative spirit, one of introspection and inner poetry, and the other of exuberance, groove and celebration, both of which will be achieved with his “two voices” – the marimba and the drumset – and drawing on the traditions that have spoken to him the most throughout his artistic career: classical, contemporary, Latin and progressive rock.

SFA’s Friday Night Film Series to screen ‘Kabluey’

SFA's School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of “Kabluey,” a dark indie comedy film written and directed by and starring Scott Prendergast, at 7 p.m. Friday, April 5, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.

In “Kabluey,” an inept Salman (Prendergast) comes to help his sister-in-law tend to his holy terror nephews while Salman's brother is off fighting in Iraq. Salman must take a humiliating job as a giant blue corporate mascot in order to help make ends meet and hold the family together.

Swingin’ Axes, Jazz Jacks to present ‘Swingin’ at the Brewery’ fundraiser

The Swingin’ Axes jazz band and The Jazz Jacks student combo will present their spring “Swingin’ at the Brewery” fundraiser from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at Fredonia Brewery in downtown Nacogdoches.

"The opening set will feature some of our standard swing dance era tunes such as ‘Satin Doll,’ ‘Route 66,’ and ‘‘Deed I Do,’” said Dr. J.D. Salas, director of the Swingin’ Axes jazz ensemble. “Dancing is welcomed and encouraged! After the Jazz Jacks combo performs, the Axes will finish up with a fun set of rock and funk tunes such as Maynard Ferguson’s ‘Chameleon’ and Chicago’s ‘25 or 6 to 4.’”

Student-directed play ‘Nice & Slow’ designed for young audiences
Nice and Slow

The School of Theatre and Dance will present the student-directed dramedy for young audiences “Nice & Slow” by Lojo Simon at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 5, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 6, in the Black Box Theatre in the Griffith Fine Arts Building.

“Nice & Slow” is the story of Sam, who is slow getting dressed on a particular morning. The grown-ups in the house expect their kid to share their hurried lifestyle, and they're not pleased. Just as Sam prepares to hop to it, the sloth living in Sam's upper bunk tickles the child's nose and triggers a sneeze. Sam goes from rushing to get ready for school to having the day off and going on fantastical adventures with sloth.
