Registration Rally set for today

SFA’s spring Registration Rally runs until 3 p.m. today in the Lumberjack Learning Lab on the first floor of Steen Library.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to tell students about the all-day event, which is intended to offer students a one-stop opportunity to receive help clearing holds and to register for the summer and fall semesters.

Representatives from the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, Student Business Services, the Office of the Registrar and the Student Success Center, among others, will be stationed and ready to offer one-on-one assistance.

Summer LEAP applications for eligible participants — SFA employees, their spouses and dependents — are available now in mySFA. Access the application form in the “Benefits” section of the Employee tab. For questions, contact Student Business Services at sbs@sfasu.edu.

OWLE to host April meeting

The Organization for Women’s Leadership and Equity invites all interested staff and faculty to its next meeting from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 12, in the Wyatt Room of Steen Library as well as via Zoom.

OWLE is a professional organization of staff and faculty who work together to empower women and support women’s professional advancement while balancing their professional, personal, and physical and mental health demands and needs.

PAAC meeting scheduled for April 11

Faculty members and professional advisors are invited to the Professional Academic Advising Council meeting from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday, April 11, in the Wyatt Room of Steen Library.

UMC to offer certified communicator training

The Certified Communicator Program from the Division of University Marketing Communications will show you how to be an effective SFA brand ambassador.

From advertising, photography and videos to web presence and Slate emails, these Zoom modules presented by UMC staff members offer the latest information on how to market your event or service as well as branding updates stemming from SFA’s affiliation with The University of Texas System.

To earn a certificate, you must complete the Foundations module and three other modules of your choice. The trainings are held from 2 to 3 p.m. on Thursdays. April trainings include:

Give 5 meeting scheduled for tomorrow

The Nacogdoches Area United Way is launching a new retiree volunteer program in the community. The Give 5 program will hold a meeting from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, at the Commercial Bank of Texas Community Room, 215 E. Main St. This meeting is open to those who are retired, planning to retire or participating in a local non-profit organization that is interested in learning about this new program.

Give 5, which started in Springfield, Missouri, is a civic-matchmaking effort that recruits and mobilizes highly skilled volunteers for safe engagement opportunities in communities. NAUW is hosting and SFA’s Center for Applied Research and Rural Innovation is sponsoring the first host site in Texas.

Early Childhood Laboratory up for Best of Nac

Daily Sentinel voters nominated the SFA Early Childhood Laboratory as one of the top five childcare centers in Nacogdoches. The next voting round is for Best of Nacogdoches 2024. You can show your support by voting for ECHL until April 22.

Annual SFA alumni golf tournament slated for April 12

The annual Bob Sitton Classic is scheduled for Friday, April 12, at Woodland Hills Golf Club in Nacogdoches. Serving as a fundraiser for SFA golf and the Alumni Association, the event honors Sitton, who served as SFA Alumni Association director from 1972 to 1998 and helped endow hundreds of scholarships that generated millions of dollars.

Saturday Morning Art Program welcomes more students
Spring 2024 Art Program

The Saturday Morning Art Program welcomed 25 elementary and middle school students to the School of Art. During the integrated arts classes, students explored a variety of mediums, emphasizing the integration of multiple subjects around overarching themes. Under the guidance of pre-service art teachers enrolled in advanced art education courses, students honed their artistic thinking and practiced the eight studio habits of mind.

Trombonist Marsalis to join SFA’s Swingin’ Axes in University Series performance

The Micky Elliott College of Fine Arts and the School of Music will present acclaimed trombonist, composer and producer Delfeayo Marsalis in a compelling performance with SFA’s Swingin’ Axes jazz band at 7:30 p.m. April 19 in Turner Auditorium.

The final University Series event of the 2023-24 Centennial Season, the concert provides an exciting opportunity to see and hear this renowned New Orleans musician as he takes the stage with SFA’s outstanding jazz musicians. The concert is sponsored in part by Etech.

Real Women Have Curves

Anyone who likes warm-hearted dramadies about family and the struggles and joys of making a small business work will love the presentation of “Real Women Have Curves” by Josefina López.

Celebrating the immigrant experience, body positivity and the wisdom and strength of Latinas, “Real Women Have Curves” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. April 18 through 20 and April 25 through 27 and at 2 p.m. April 20 and 21 and April 27and 28 in the Black Box Theatre.

Jazz Doctors, Swingin’ Aces to present concert tomorrow

The Jazz Doctors of SFA will join the Swingin’ Aces jazz band for a concert at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in Cole Concert Hall, Wright Music Building.

The concert will open with the Swingin’ Aces, directed by Jake Walburn, performing some jazz standards from the Count Basie Library, such as “April in Paris” and “88 Basie Street.” The Jazz Doctors will perform “Ymir’s Bones” by Ben Morris, assistant professor of composition at SFA.

The School of Theatre and Dance will present the spring student-choreographed Danceworks “Unveiled” concerts at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, April 11 and 12, and at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 13, in the third floor Dance Performance Studio, Griffith Fine Arts Building.

The spring event, Danceworks “Unveiled,” represents everything from sculpture-inspired dance to the prison boom of 1970, according to Heather Samuelson, SFA’s dance program director and associate director of the School of Theatre and Dance.

SFA Opera Theater to present Weill’s ‘Street Scene’

“Street Scene,” an American opera by Kurt Weill, Langston Hughes and Elmer Rice, is this year’s opera theater production presented by the School of Music.

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning 1929 play of the same name by Rice, “Street Scene” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, April 11 through 13, in Turner Auditorium.

Kermit Fossil

A recently discovered fossilized skull of a 270-million-year-old ancient amphibian ancestor has been named after one of the most iconic amphibians of modern times: Kermit the Frog. The specimen’s full government name is Kermitops gratus. Calvin So, the lead author of the new paper, said the naming is an opportunity to engage everyday people in the discoveries made in the often hidden-away halls of museum collections.
